Took these conference demographics from GT board

Apr 29, 2013, 9:51 PM

First posted by Ramblin Red (GT Fan) then reposted on FSU board by Woad Blue (UNC Fan). These are interesting facts. The ACC is our home and it has loads of potential.

Just some interesting tidbits of why demographically and from a TV standpoint the ACC is not in nearly as bad a position as everyone else thinks (other than the fact that there is a core that has no intention on ever leaving anyways).

First demographics.
Here are the 5 major conferences in their form going forward.

ACC has a 10-state footprint. it is currently the largest of the 5 major conferences with a 2010 population of 99.7 MM people. it is expected to grow to 108.3 MM by 2020 and 4 of the 10 states (GA, SC, NC, VA) are expected to see double digit population gains this decade.

The SEC with the addition of TX has the 2nd largest footprint - 11 states and 89.7 MM people in 2010 with growth expected to be to 101.2 MM in 2020. 3 states are expected to grow by double digits (TX - a whopping 19.8% almost have of the growth in their footprint, GA and SC).

Currently the B10 has the 3rd largest footprint but has awful demographics. 11 states with 83.9 MM in 2010 going to 86.9 MM in 2020. it is the only conference that every state has growth less than the US avg expected for this decade. The highest growth state is expected to be Nebraska (7.9%) and that is due to it being so small in population (< 2MM).

The Pac 12 is 4th in population with a 2010 population of 62.1MM with expected growth to 70.2 MM by 2020. It is the only conference where every state in the footprint is growing faster than the national average. Only 6 states though in the footprint and CA makes up 60% of the footprint.

The Big 12 has the smallest footprint of the 5 major conferences with just 36.8MM people in 6 states. TX accounts for 70% of that population and that increases to 72% by 2020. TX and OK are the only states above avg growth. Fox overpaid to keep that conference together and have college football content but i bet the next contract won't be as generous unlesx Fox needs to continue to overpay to stay in the game.

Here are 2 football related numbers to chew on.
First TV ratings for this season. According to Nielsen here are the avg TV viewership numbers for the conferenes in the televised games this season.
Not surprisingly the SEC led the way with an avg of 4.5 MM per broadcast. This is helped by having the only guaranteed national game every week on CBS.

Second is the Big 10 with 3.3 MM viewers on avg.
Third is the ACC with 2.65 MM viewers on avg.
Fourth is the B12 with 2.3 MM and last is the PAC 12 with 2.1MM viewers on avg.

Another interesting stat is the conference championship games. Back when it had one the Big 12 was second only to the SEC in attendence, not a big surprise.
For the last 2 seasons when 4 of the conferences had a championship game the avg attendence is
SEC 75,070
ACC 69,226
B10 52,706 (this is awfully low for a conference with such large universities)
P12 45,519

The ACC if it starts to play better on the field is really well positioned for the long term with a large growing footprint, solid if not spectacular TV numbers and room to grow.
Frankly the biggest thing the ACC needs to do is to get control of its narrative rather than allowing others to control it and get its fans to stop being such a group of self-loathing whiners and get them to be more positive about the conference their schools are in.

National Championship games.

It looked like the ACC would be the strongest conference in America.

Then Nick Saban won 4 National Titles in 9 years for the SEC.

FSU has struggled to finish in the top 10 over the last 10 years.

Miami hasn't contributed anything in that time frame, either, but before that they had some great teams. Clemson, also has been on a sabbatical for way too long. If Clemson and FSU regain their prominence, it will make the ACC brand much more of a factor. Throw in success from the new entries and a resurgence of Miami, et. al., and we will be a very formidable conference with something to sell to a huge audience.

Truer words were never written.

BC, UNCheat, NCSU, Duke, Virginia and Wake need to stop flat out sucking in football.

Re: AND

Wrong BC, Duke, Virginia, and Wake can be terrible it will actually make the conference look better. They just need to be sheltered and not play major OOC games. Look at Kentucky, Mizzu, Tenn, Arky, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Miss St. last season. When the bottom of the conference drops 30+ games to the top half it makes everyone look like world beaters.

The money the SEC is making now is the difference

Apr 30, 2013, 9:23 AM

because they are able to hire the better coaches, and invest in their facilities. I doubt many ACC teams are willing to dip into the red to pay for the big name coaches, and soup up their facilities. You get what you pay for.

Yep, but take a look at most of the schools

Apr 30, 2013, 9:30 AM

across the country. Very rarely are they all good at multiple sports. Louisville actually is the exception as of late, but usually schools are really good at either football or basketball.
