The last two times we got blown out in a Bowl game

Aug 19, 2012, 1:31 PM

we opened the season with a shocking shutout blowout.

1995 Gator (Jan 1 96) Syracuse wins 41-0
1996 Opener UNC wins 45-0

2002 Tangerine TT wins 55-15
2003 Opener UGA wins 30-0

I'm not trying to be negative and I'm very excited about the future (I think we win ACC in 2013 and compete this year) but we getting way to cocky regarding Auburn. Auburns last 3 recruiting classes have been ranked by rivals:

2012 - 10 (clem 14)
2011 - 7 (8)
2010 - 4 (19)

There is a TON of talent on that roster most of which we just haven't heard of YET.

I agree with your comments about Auburn....I don't think

Aug 19, 2012, 1:36 PM

for a moment they will be a pushover. If we allow for a certain amount of equitable capabilities, then I think motivation will be key. I believe we have the greater reasons for motivation, and hence, my prior post. Frankly, as you've indicated, there's no reason for cockiness about any game.

I tend to believe that if you need something like the quote

Aug 19, 2012, 5:23 PM

of an opponent pinned up on your locker room wall to motivate you to win, then you're probably not deserving of or going to win.

However, I hate that Dabo gave that speach after the Auburn game last year. That's gotta fire AU up. Fortunately, we're on a neutral site.

You make an excellent point. Don't think we will get shutout but I am concerned. If we get beat at the line we are done. And Auburn is deep on the line. Best hope is to escape with a W and move on.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll be shocked if we blow them out.

Aug 19, 2012, 1:57 PM

Very, very happy, but shocked. They have the players and the talent, so the potential is there for them to be very good; the only question is can they put it all together.

I'm expecting a tough game.

On the other hand, we've come back from bowl humiliation

Aug 19, 2012, 2:00 PM

The 2006 Music City Bowl wasn't technically a blowout but it was almost as bad as a bowl loss can get and was totally humiliating.... but the season opener the next year was against a Top 25 Florida State team and Clemson won that game 24-18 to start 2007.

I think Auburn will be a tough challenge but I think we will prevail.

GO TIGERS

I seem to remember a Gator Bowl against Dan Marino

Aug 19, 2012, 2:02 PM

which we followed up with an outstanding year the following year......

use all of the bowl game blowouts...don't just pick out a random couple.....

While you mention the 78 season following the loss to Pitt

Aug 19, 2012, 2:12 PM

(which by the way was not led by Dan Marino, he was still in HS). We opened the 78 season with a loss to underdog Georgia.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, we opened the season beating The Citadel 58-3.

Aug 19, 2012, 5:12 PM

We fumbled the ball 5 times in game two and lost to UGA in Athens 12-0.

Matt Cavanaugh was Pitt QB - but your point is a good one***

Anyone who is TRULY "cocky" at this point...

Aug 19, 2012, 2:04 PM

is an idiot. And it's true, there are a LOT of idiots on this board.

Swinney and his staff still have much to prove, ESPECIALLY on defense and on offensive line. With our best player out for smoking dope, being overconfident in an opening game at the GA Dome is just plain stupid.

We'll be fortunate to win the game, and if we do win it will be because:

1. We were able to run the ball with success

and

2. We were able to stop Auburn from rushing at will on our defense.

Different times and different teams

Aug 19, 2012, 2:15 PM

Hard to compare teams past a couple of years. Totally different dynamics with coaches, players and competition. Auburn is typically a very tough SEC team that deserves repect. When you have o and d line uncertainties and your star rcvr out, you should not take ANYBODY for granted. They have also recruited very well as of the past few years.

Clemson Football, the glory days are here!

Re: Different times and different teams

Aug 19, 2012, 2:24 PM

They are just as inexperienced as us on the lines. Two starters returning on their defensive and offensive lines as I remember.
That's not even mentioning the fact that they are using players recruited to run a spread offense shoehorned into a
Pro style offense. Could we lose the game if we overlook them? Sure but I am not worried about this game as some are as long as we show up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think most people are cocky. Most understand we will

Aug 19, 2012, 2:22 PM

have to be on our best game in order to have a chance to win. That, and those other two games have absolutely nothing to do with 2012.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Fans being cocky will have nothing to do with outcome.

Aug 19, 2012, 2:57 PM

Game will be a huge battle though.

Aug 19, 2012, 3:02 PM

GOing to be a great game. Can't wait.
Go TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

To win we are going to have to fight and battle them

Aug 19, 2012, 3:40 PM

Do you realize

Aug 19, 2012, 5:42 PM

that the 2003 UGA team went on to be ranked 6th at the end of the season and 1996 UNC was 10th at the end. Both teams came second in their conference and UGA went on to be 11-3 and UNC was 10-2.
