Andersons own Jim Rice. A great running back in high school who became one of baseballs greatest, I enjoy watching him on NESN prior to games. He is a very knowledgeable guy and a sharp dresser! Anderson should be proud.

Now I’m really confused. Rice was already with the Red Sox by the early 1970s way before Coach Ford came to Clemson. If Rice were recruited to Clemson, it would have been Hootie Ingram or Red Parker.

as a head coach in the Gator Bowl, Rice was AL MVP. He was a rookie in '75, and had at least 3-4 years in the minors prior to that

He also wanted to play in the south (warm weather) and on natural grass.
So he signed with Pitt.

Moses Malone...Really...

He barely passed kindergarten .
For me Herschel Walker. We almost got him...Coach Howard told me so himself.
He said Clemson was in the running but Alabama found out that Herschel loved cold milk and that his refrigerator didn't work to well so the Bama boys got his mom a new refrigerator so Herschel could get all the cold milk he wanted .
The Georgia boys found out about the refrigerator and bought his mom a new house to put it in.
Coach Howard could spin a yarn .

I heard we bought him a Trans Am. I believecUGA paid him throughout his time there. My father in law claims he knew the bag man and was solicited on multiple occasions to deliver the money to Walker. He was solicited because he was neither an alumnus nor a booster.

Have heard before that Davis probably wouldn't have qualified academically. The biggest surprise to me was Tony Rice. Danny Ford wanted him bad. After he committed to ND back then, I read in a Greenville News article that Rice said Danny actually over recruited him. Said he was there in Woodruff a lot waiting on him when he got out of class or practice and he got tired of it. Rare that you hear of a player thinking he was over recruited by a school.

Ok maybe not the best athlete but I thought of Tony Rice. Went to Notre Dame and won the Natty. Would have done the same if he had come to Clemson.

I was told that Tony Rice was denied admission because of academics. I think he was a top student at ND. Not sure of this.
Do you remember the Rice kid from Sumter who ended up at Tampa! He’s the best high school player I ever saw. Absolutely was unstoppable in the Shrine Bowl. I think it was Sumter. Remember him?
Amazing all three of those greats had the same last name!

He's doing things at fifty something that 99.9% of people can't do in their twenties. He's incredibly gifted, and extremely motivated and disciplined too.
Honorable mention goes to Pete Maravich, not for his athleticism, but because he would've set many Clemson basketball records and maybe even encouraged our administration at the time to care about basketball.

Jeff Francoeur(sp?)-Braves, Dan Marino, Tommie Frazier and Stephen Davis were good ones. Solomon could not get into ny ACC school because of academics. Best player that was only with us for a short time, before dying in a car accident when home on a weekend in Sumter as the season started. Marvin Montgomery, only a freshman was an outstanding athlete (wide receiver) and would have did great things for us back in late 80s/early 90s.

Agree re Moses Malone or Hershel Walker
I spoke to Hershel and he said he loved Clemson but Georgia paid him
Jim Rice was never coming to Clemson. He had major league all over him and he proved it to be right

That was a good thread and all the nominees were well thought out .... except for Bentley!
Rice was offered a scholarship but wisely chose the baseball route. I vaguely remember him being introduced at a football game years ago. Anyone have knowledge of that? I’m a Rice fan and have been a Red Sox fans since the early 50s so I’m feeling good baseball wise today.
