The day has almost arrived - I go under the knife tomorrow.

Aortic valve replacement. I posted on here about it a little over a week ago when I found out I needed it, but did not know when the surgery would take place. Just a little nervous, but confident in the doctors and what ever the man upstairs has in in store for me. Even a little excited, in hopes that it will clear up some issues that had been dragging me down as of late and that I will feel a lot better. Hopefully I will be back on here twisting tiddies and spouting knowledge in no time. Until then, Prayers, good vibes, and bad jokes appreciated.

are you going with Pig or mechanical?

You will be up and around in no time!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bovine. They said I could do either pig, cow, or mechanical.

Oct 30, 2017, 11:32 AM

Mechanical valves last longer, virtually forever, but I'd have to be on blood thinner like coumadin for the rest of my life. Not only is that a pain in the ###, but can be problematic for someone that is as young and active as me, as little bumps and bruises can become huge bruises or even worse (a little bump to the head can cause a hemorrhage). He said they don't do pig valves any more and that bovine valves overall seem to work better. MOOOOOOO!

It depends. Mechanical valves last longer but would

Oct 30, 2017, 11:56 AM

require me to be on "blood thinners" the rest of my life as they are more prone to clotting. My mother had a mechanical valve and was on Coumadin to regulate the coagulation rate of her blood, and it was a nightmare; never could get it and keep it regulated; always too thin, which made her dizzy and faint, or too thick which caused tiny clots resulting in mini-strokes. There is also the risk of small bumps turning into giant bruises or worse, which would be a problem as I have a physical job and hobbies which keep me pretty banged up as it is. Heart doc says that I should get 10-15 years out of a cow valve. Then when the cow valve gives out, I can have a mechanical valve inserted then, which can be done more or less arthroscopically, through the groin like a heart cath.

A valve job isn't a big deal.

Oct 30, 2017, 11:55 AM

They'll just pull the intake, exhaust and remove the head. I think getting a new valve instead of trying to reseat the one you burnt by setting your timing too low is the better option.

I know you old guys like to turn your distributors back to make everyone believe you have a big camshaft but the results is usually a burnt valve.

I hope you get yourself a real camshaft and your valves seat well. I never figured out what a 'fullrace,' cam was.

Prayers for your plight.
