I know this is old news please read and help understand this. In 2014 USC vs Clemson

Mid first quarter Clemson does an unexpected offside kick. We get it. This is DW4 game when he best the coots on one leg. So we successfully get the onside kick.
-The ball traveled over ten yards in the air. -We catch the ball in the air.
It looked as though we got it!
But refs discuss and their explanation was that since the ball never hit the ground USC had to have an unimpeded opportunity to catch the ball.
Then I youtube the alabama onside kick in the national championship game and it was identical. But we all know how that went. Someone please watch both and explain this to me. I'm pissed off all over again.

Even though we won this game I can't watch anymore. Sick to.my stomach there was a clemson guy within 5 yards of the bama guy who caught it.

its not like he was in position to catch the ball.
Dabo argued this last yr that we ran the same play against S Car.

Ok. Appreciate the explanation. I didn't have the energy to get on Tnet after the loss and didn't cut my tv on for 2 weeks. So I missed out on the interviews postgame.

yer directly under the ball to catch it. he has to have an unimpeded opportunity to catch the ball b/c it was kicked into the air and not bounced on the ground as a traditional onside would be.
In the bama game we didn't have guy in position to make that catch.
sucks

If you watch the usuck player called for a fair catch. since it did not hit the ground we had to give him a chance to catch it.

... then you must give the opposing player a chance to catch it cleanly before you can touch the ball or the player.
Most on-side attempts are kicked in such a way that they bounce almost immediately off the kicking tee. At that point they become a free ball.

We didn't give coot a chance to catch...we didn't have a player in the area to the to do the same on the bama kick.....when this happened in the natty, I thought the same-why-? about the 2014 coot game and found it on YouTube - u can see the coot did get a hand up for the fair catch

True ... if it's just a straight (but, short) pooch kick, then the opposing player has the right to make a clean catch before getting hit ... even if they don't signal fair catch, you can't interfere with the player or the ball until he makes an effort to catch it.
But, if the ball carroms off the ground high into the air, it's an immediate free ball and anything goes ... apparently even "targeting" if the UNC on-sides kick controversy is an example.

Actually if it only bounces once you can still call a fair catch.

Rule 6 Section 4 Article 1 paragraph f
ARTICLE 1. a. A player of the receiving team within the boundary lines attempting to catch a kick, and so located that he could have caught a free kick or a scrimmage kick that is beyond the neutral zone, must be given an unimpeded opportunity to catch the kick (A.R. 6-3-1-III, A.R. 6-4-1-V, VI and IX).
f. During a free kick a player of the receiving team in position to receive the ball has the same kick-catch and fair-catch protection whether the ball is kicked directly off the tee or is immediately driven to the ground, strikes the ground once and goes into the air in the manner of the ball kicked directly off the tee.
