The Myth of SCar "traditions"

Mar 17, 2015, 2:50 PM

This post > http://www.tigernet.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=1448457&tstart=0
prompted me to think of all of South Carolina's so called traditions.

All of the below "traditions" were actually used and made popular by someone else.

Oops

So let's begin:
-------------
SC "Tradition": 2001 Entrance music played before sporting events

Actual Origin:
1. 2001 Space Odyssey: 1960s Scifi Movie > http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi2388329497

2. Wrestler Ric Flair: Entrance music > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exIorKS1ZBc

-------------

SC "Tradition": Smoke entrance during football games

Actual Origin:
Miami Hurricanes > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71pZ607SmKs Go to 0:40
-------------

SC "Tradition": Waving white flags at football games
(also that usually means "we surrender")

Actual Origin...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Towel_Power

-------------

SC "Tradition": Calling themselves USC

Actual Origin:
The University of Southern Cal > http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/college_guide/blog/usc_vs_usc.php

-------------

SC "Tradition": Hand gesture "Showing spurs"

Actual origin:
It means "Hang loose" in Hawaii > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaka_sign
-------------

In fact there is only one tradition they did not beg, borrow, or steal from somewhere else...
That is the chicken as a mascot. That is having a flightless bird as their mascot that is synonymously used to describe someone as being a coward. They did this and then chose to name that bird a name that would eventually become more well known as a male body part... to which they design cheers around yelling that word aloud.. thousands of people at a time.

So... yeah. Ill step off my soapbox now.

Best thing is

they took their chicken mascot and put it in a dress. Now San Francisco isn't the only place in this country where men cheer wildly for a #### in a dress.

Actually the use of wiki is appropriate for scar since they just make chit up all the time and claim its true

Yeah I tried to only use Wikipedia for the simple ones.

Don't forget the so called "tradition" of their mascot appearing from behind a shower curtain inside a cage like some bad magic trick.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cage? I thought it was a jail cell, symbolic of who they are.***

lol. Symbolic of who they are, as well as a foreshadowing effect of what to look forward to after(if) graduation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually....

Mar 17, 2015, 3:48 PM

$CU's "tradition" of playing the song "2001 a Space Oduyssey" as the entrance music before sporting events was proposed by that idiot Tommy Suggs after he heard it played at the beginning of an Elvis Pressley concert he attended.

True story.

That said, the point of your post is entirely accurate. Nothing they do is original, but rather stolen for some other source.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

"2001" was actually like quadruple stolen:

Mar 17, 2015, 3:53 PM

Also Sprach Zarathustra:

Strauss composition, based on a Nietzsche work, used in a 60s Sci-Fi movie, co-opted by fat-era Elvis, stolen by USuCk.

Their mascot is named after the racist criminal Thomas Sumter.

Mar 17, 2015, 4:06 PM

This excerpt below, from Wikipedia, gives evidence that they chose the correct mascot and still, to this day, exhibit those same unacceptable behaviors much like their namesake Thomas "Carolina Gamecock" Sumter.

"Upon returning to the colonies, Sumter became stranded in South Carolina due to financial difficulties. He petitioned the colony for reimbursement of his travel expenses, but was denied. He was subsequently imprisoned for debt in Virginia. When his friend and fellow soldier Joseph Martin arrived in Staunton, Martin asked to spend the night with Sumter in jail. Martin gave Sumter 10 guineas and a tomahawk. Sumter used the money to buy his way out of jail in 1766.[17] When Martin and Sumter were reunited some 30 years later, Sumter repaid the money.

Sumter settled in Stateburg in the High Hills of Santee in the Claremont (later Sumter) District. He married Mary Jameson in 1767, and together they opened several small businesses and became successful plantation owners. "

We all know what plantation owners kept onsite. Slaves !

Change your mascot now SCAR ! ! !

;)

That's a "racist criminal"?

Mar 17, 2015, 4:12 PM

If Usuc had had any sense their mascot would be a soldier on horseback. Then, every few years when they don;t suck and they play on TV, it's an opportunity to teach a little history about the State of SC's Rev War heroes.

They're happy with shower curtains, fire extinguishers and a chicken.

Is USC the only University with a Queer mascot

Mar 19, 2015, 4:18 PM

a rooster in a dress coming out of the tent/closet each Saturday

something everyone wants to see and have their children see at all the games.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're wrong on #1.

Mar 19, 2015, 4:25 PM

It's from here, not a 60's sci-fi movie.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Also_sprach_Zarathustra_%28Strauss%29

And Elvis used it as far back as 1971, not Rick Flare in 1997 (Since SC has been using it since the 1980's.) Flair is a SC fan....

Re: You're wrong on #1.

I will agree with this as well. "Also Sprach Zarathrusta" is a piece by Richard Strauss! But stolen none the less.

Re: The Myth of SCar "traditions"

Mar 19, 2015, 5:27 PM

CORRECTION!!!!

The "Fighting Gamecock(s)"

The nickname was given to Gen. Thomas Sumter, name sake of the city and county Sumter AND founder of the township, Stateburg; a place that was one vote shy of being the state's capital after Charleston....So the Sumter High School Gamecocks actually own the namesake of the Gamecock. Not the school in the city of Columbia.....

So in theory, the University of South Carolina stole, beg, and borrowed all their "traditions!"

You're welcome!
