The Mental Game...The Difference Maker

Sep 1, 2007, 9:25 PM

This is very much like the theme of the book, The Inner Game of Tennis. People who want to perform must first train and practice. When they can do it in practice, they need to transfer that to the field, court, etc. How? Let the the physical self, the one that has the muscle memory and expertise, do the job without the mental self, the doubter and criticizer, take over.

That doesn't mean that the athlete is not to think, of course, but it does mean that he/she is to focus on the elements of the game, the ball, the vision.

We all know that our backup QBs aren't awful while every underdog team's have gems. Part of the the problem for QBs for programs like Clemson's versus programs like Appalachian State (against "Goliath") and Wake Forest is expectations. Like Dan Scott mentions, sometimes playing as the underdog allows you to play with "wreckless abandon." But it all goes to how much you allow the pressure of the expectations to creep into your consciousness and allow the mental self to try to take over.

Cullen has all of the physical tools needed to lead Clemson. I really don't doubt that at all. Confidence and patience and calm make all the difference in the world.

I hope our coaches are keenly aware of that. They should be, but I don't know that they really focus on that as much as others do.

Dan,

Did you write that for Tommy Bowden? That is EXACTLY what happened to the team at the end of last year after we beat GT.

I hope Coach Bowden reads your column!
