Parris Island may shut down

due to rising sea levels and no infrastructure for female recruits. Since there are just 2 marine basic training stations you think they all go to the one in San Diego if Parris Island shuts down but San Diego location also has no infrastructure for female recruits and the California fires reduces the number of available training days. So the may go to a new location.

How did Beaufort land the marine basic training camp in 1891 to begin with? Neat story about Robert Small who grew up a slave in Beaufort. As a slave he was sent to Charleston and worked on a Confederate ship in Charleston during the Civil War. One night, during the Union blockade of Charleston Harbor he stole the ship and with his family sailed to a Union ship also in Charleston Harbor and gained his freedom. He later became a US Congressman and years later bought the very house in Beaufort that he served as a slave. It was Robert Smalls that orchestrated the Marines to build a station in Parris Island. There is a plaque on East Battery Street in Charleston describing the events of him taking the Confederate Ship "Planter".

Hope they come up with a plan to keep it open. A lot of folks down there depend on PI for their livelihoods.

He is a powerful man in DC. I’m thinking he will see that parris island will be saved. Could Jaime Harrison save it? I think not.

Do they really need infrastructure for females at both locations, it doesn’t seem like the numbers warrant that. Females could all just go to San Diego. I don’t buy the water levels, I think it’s pretext for the female thing.

The take home message is that the Marines instead of putting out the best killing product is now hamstrung and forced to have gender integration in the training. I still remember the Commandant at Quantico telling my wife and I along with the other parents of the graduates of OCS, "It's not about the nice haircuts and sharp dress blue uniforms. We are Marines and we are trained to kill people." While it is certainly true that women can be taught to shoot a rifle just as well as a man, there are other demands on the battlefield where there is no substitute for physical strength. Political correctness can not only be annoying, it may lead to tragedy ultimately if taken too far.

Correct Rons1! Being a Marine is not part of a big social experiment. It is about being an effective part of a team to overcome your enemy .... fire and maneuver ...... the basic element of war. Regardless of how sophisticated we get there will always be a place for the Marine Infantry ...... and first and foremost, all marines are riflemen. Do not do away with Parris Island!

I suspect the Marine Corps may have gotten many recruits through the years to choose their branch of the armed forces because they told them they would start off by sending them to a place called "Parris Island" for their basic training. Sounded like it would be an all-expense-paid relaxing vacation.

Couple that with soft Marines, fat Americans and a losing cult in Columbia SC that just spent $995,000 on a huge metal chicken on a pole with no claws to fight for its life..
and you can clearly see where America is going!
LOL, hang in there TiGERS!

As a woman I'm trying to figure out what changes are needed, maybe replace a couple of urinals with toilets?? Easey peasey!
If you ever have a chance to attend a graduation ceremony at Parris Island please do! Very inspiring.

About the "Social Programs" we've implemented in our armed forces . They'll do what armies are taught to do...kill people and break things. "Social Programs" will be the death of the best fighting forces on Earth on both the base and in the field .

Those fears are based in politics, lies, and propaganda. Sea level rise over the last 100 years has been minimal. Marginal. And anything in the future is pure propaganda. There are some experts that think man is the cause of global warming despite the lack of evidence but they take a more rational and reasonable approach as opposed to the radical hyperbolic irrational that most on the left have prescribed to and those people see no more than an inch in sea level rise over the next 100 years. Maybe two at most and none of that happening anytime soon. Given the fact that the average tide in South Carolina is roughly 5 feet with as much as another foot during the king tide twice a month, 1 to 2 inches is not an issue. I live in Charleston and the only time we have any flooding issues is during high tide and heavy thunderstorms or some type of hurricane/tropical storm. And the flooding during storms is fixable and politicians have been saying they were going to fix it for decades but don’t!
The best proof to rising sea levels and man-made global warming being more hoax than reality is the fact that Obama bought a $15 million beachfront home recently.
If you are still buying the man-made global warming hysteria google Judith curry and educate yourself!

Downtown Charleston has many days with sunny day flooding. There are many days in spring and fall when many streets are closed due to flooding from high tides. The city is spending multiple millions of dollars now to raise the battery wall on Murray Blvd because of flooding. Ten years ago these sunny day flooding events were a fraction of what they are today. I work downtown and see first hand the effects of Spring or King tides. It is definitely real.

The Citadel could probably give them some tips on how to retrofit the barracks if that is actually an issue. Military bases closing are more likely tied to politics, though.

Tough to hear of this, tougher to visualize it. That place is sacred to Marines. I could go off the rails about this on multiple levels but at the end of the day, this is all driven by politics and all that comes with it. Disgusts me, and I am about as far from a far Right guy as can be. This is trash.

The nuke was suggested for severe hurricanes. Climate change may require multiple nukes.

So they are going to shut down a Marine Base because of rising seal levels? How many millions of years before PI is underwater? Those marines are probably quaking in their boots worried about rising sea levels.
