Soyuz Rocket has been very reliable

The US government has been contracting with the russian space agency since the fall of the soviet union. We want to keep their rocket scientist busy building rockets for space exploration instead of missles. We wanted to keep them paid for rockets instead of others paying them for missiles.

ULA still uses russian engines on their Atlas rocket. Congress finally gave them a deadline. Their new rocket, Vulcan Centaur will use a Blue Origin BE-4 instead of the Russian RD-180 for the first stage. The centaur 2nd stage uses Rocektdyne RL10s just like atles and both use albeit different Northrup Grumman solid rocket boosters.
