The ACC is in a great position to be a top conference in all

Jan 23, 2013, 11:31 AM

sports. Membership that covers the entire East coast. Members in the most populated states and the coolest cities. Members in the fastest growing region in the country. Good football brands in FSU, Miami, Clemson, VaT, and to a lesser extent Louisville. The best basketball conference, bar none. A good baseball conference. The assiciation with ND is very positive.

So the question is... will the ACC ever live up to it's potential? Personally I think the only thing the ACC is lacking is strong leadership. Can you imagine what the ACC could do if the PAC or BIG10 commissioner ran the ACC?

Bashful, I can agree with you in all accounts. But changing the leadership has proven to be a lost cause. Idiots will usually side with Idiots, and the ACC B O T's has proven that to be true. About the only thing that could save the ACC leadership from their selves would be an assassination....

Miami is not a good football brand in 2013.

Jan 23, 2013, 11:57 AM

And VT is losing steam quickly.

Meanwhile, others are improving

Jan 23, 2013, 12:02 PM

It's all cyclical. In another few years, we'll be talking about how VT has returned to normal, UNC has re-entered respectiveness, and Clemson and FSU have distances themselves.

I also think Louisville is going to help the conference in football. They just beat a SEC team in a BCS bowl game and have a lot of players returning.

Louisville is going to be a force

Jan 23, 2013, 12:07 PM

They're dumping tons of money into their athletics in general. They're not playing around. I wouldn't be surprised to see them be in the division title race on most years.

Plus they have Charley Strong that will keep Loui strong in FB. Loui will be in the top 3 acc FB teams.

And swoffy will still be trying to finish killing FB in the acc;)

UNC is schizo, VT may or may not improve.

Jan 23, 2013, 1:19 PM [ in reply to Meanwhile, others are improving ]

Who else is improving? Duke, marginally. NC State potentially. Virginia. None of them are likely to reach the national level of recognition required to boost the status of the ACC.

If you want to stay in the ACC no matter what, then fine, but don't try to polish turds and sell them as Rolos.

Rolos. Mmmmmm

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

By that criteria, Auburn and Tennessee are nobodies.

Jan 23, 2013, 12:07 PM [ in reply to Miami is not a good football brand in 2013. ]

VT is losing steam? They went 4-4 in conference and went to a bowl game this year. Last year they received an at-large bid to a BCS bowl.

What must you think of the worthless programs at Tennessee, Auburn and Arkansas?

Tennessee is a terrible football brand in 2013.

Jan 23, 2013, 1:17 PM

Are you guys even paying attention? And yes, 4-4 in the ACC means VT was forgotten this year. Two or three more years like that and they'll be completely irrelevant (in other words, back to normal for the Hokies).

Auburn is losing steam quickly as well, and if it weren't for their 2010 MNC, would probably be a middling brand at best. Arkansas is a national joke for a number of reasons.

You're confusing "brand" with "current team"

Jan 23, 2013, 1:50 PM

Huge difference.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're living in the 20th Century.

Jan 23, 2013, 4:06 PM

Your "brand" is basically as strong as your last five years. Everything else is ancient history to the twitter generation.

If you say so.

Jan 24, 2013, 2:45 AM

"Brand" only matters to recruits, and recruits don't give a #### about anything that happened in the early 90s. Ask Washington or Georgia Tech or Miami or BYU the list goes on....

Swofford should have been fired when

Jan 23, 2013, 1:08 PM

the SEC aligned itself with the Big 12 to do the Sugar Bowl. It looked to me like Swofford aligned himself with Slive for awhile. Then suddenly out of the blue, the SEC and Big 12 form an alliance to lock in the $80 million Sugar Bowl for themselves. Swoffie gets the Orange Bowl for the ACC. Initially it looked good when Swoffie got the Orange Bowl. But the Orange will pay out only $55 million, half of which will probably go to another conference, SEC, Big 12, PAC or Big 10. Slive looked like a snake the way he used Swofford, looking like he was buddy, buddy with Swoffie. But Swofford looked like a fool, when Slive aligned the SEC with the Big 12, instead of the ACC. Swofford should have been shown the door, immediately at that time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wishful thinking

Jan 23, 2013, 4:22 PM

In the near term (and potentially MUCH longer), only FSU and Clemson represent any real national presence in football. In basketball, well thats another story, but from a monetary standpoint, its also irrelevant. Same for baseball.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Teams have to start winning

Jan 23, 2013, 5:08 PM

Clemson and FSU are showing they're gonna finally do their part, now can VT get back to winning 10 games? Can Miami finally get back?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It looks like Louisville is becoming the next Miami.

Jan 23, 2013, 5:15 PM

Miami's leadership doesn't seem to have the desire to push their football program as much anymore, while Louisville is showing just the opposite.
