ESPN analyst not sold on Trevor Lawrence as a "can't miss" prospect

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is one of the more elite signal-callers to enter an NFL draft in a long time. His combination of size, arm strength, speed, Read Update »

Apparently Ryan Clark thinks Trevor Lawrence played in the secondary vs. Joe Burrow & Justin Fields and his draft status is suffering. I also like how he conveniently leaves out his thoroughly outplaying Tua to fit his narrative.

True there are no sure things, but TL would easily compare favorably to the last 5 QBs taken #1.

These guys get paid to talk and make controversy. No issue with them doing their job. Their opinions have little relevance to anything.

You can not criticize one for losing 1 game and not criticize the other for several subpar games...and oh yeah...we beat them last year with Fields throwing a couple of INTs including the game loser

Feb 20, 2021, 8:51 AM [ in reply to So Winston, Goff, Mayfield, Murray & Burrow had better credentials? ]

I wouldn't doubt that ESPN was the driving force to change how the NFL treated Draft negotiations. The team with the first pick, used to be able to start negotiating, and even sign, the first player chosen. The next pick could then, do the same. Now, they have to wait until the actual draft, before starting any talks.

Trevor is a generational player in terms of size, and arm talent. Does he have things to improve on? Certainly, all players do when the become pros. Guess what? As students, players don't get the opportunity to work on their game, as much as professionals.

All college QB's have the luxury of throwing to open receivers. The NFL has much tighter windows, and QB's have to throw players open, or anticipate throws with more precision. They also have to be able to accelerate their reads. This is something Trevor needs to, and will, work on.

I think Deshaun was better at handling pressure situations, and continues to show this in his NFL career. While Deshaun has very good arm strength, he doesn't have Trevor's laser. Very few humans do.

Who knows? Our next great Clemson QB, D.J. Uiagalelei, may be a combination of the best of both.

Go Tigers!

If Trevor Lawrence had of been an SEC QB, every analyst that gets their paycheck from ESECPN would bet their life that TL was the best QB to have ever come from the college ranks. He would be branded the top generational can't miss on QB ever while in college.

Headed to the NFL, he would be labeled the best rookie Franchise QB to ever enter the NFL, in NFL history!!!

We can't help that ESECPN hires people that are so stupid with believing the SEC is the best conference bc Bama has held up the SEC since Nick Saban's hire at Alabama!!!! When the real truth is told, this is what it will be, Saban made that conference to be what idiots believe to be the best conference, and it is bc of Bama's dominance in college FB!!!!!!!

Feb 19, 2021, 2:52 PM

He's made this same point many times. It's nothing new.

Trevor will just have to prove him wrong.

My point of comparison is Justin Herbert, who I watched often at Oregon. Trevor is better at literally EVERYTHING than Herbert and I expect him to do much better in the NFL also.

It will be settled on the field.

Using Ryan Clark’s logic

Feb 19, 2021, 3:26 PM

Patrick Mahomes is a bust because Tim Brady outplayed him in the Super Bowl.

People fail to recognize that Trevor Lawrence did not play bad against Ohio State. We moved the ball and scored easily when we let Trevor throw it. Two of the first three drives we went right down the field. Then for whatever reason we started trying to run the ball up the middle. Once we got down a couple of touchdowns they said all this running up the middle isn’t working so let’s go back to throwing the ball and we started scoring again. But by then the game was over. Granted our OL did not play well, but Play calling and offensive strategy were our biggest weakness and of course our defense. Not having Tony Elliot calling please hurt more than people thought. But Trevor threw for 400 yards and played well all things considered.

Truth is Trevor had one bad game at Clemson and that was against LSU. And LSU had 14 draft picks and a fifth year senior at quarterback running a unique NFL offense with an NFL OC.

Trevor would’ve been the first player drafted as a freshman, as a sophomore ahead of Joe Burrow, and this year!

Feb 19, 2021, 4:56 PM [ in reply to Using Ryan Clark’s logic ]

Born and raised in Missouri. Attended Missouri Southern State University (long pause here...for laughter). Had his brilliant football coaching career at Joplin High School cut short, by not being any good at anything. Spun failure into gold by being willing to say anything he’s told to say by those that pay him money.

Matt Miller has no actual credentials/achievements. Unless you consider accepting payment for being a dipstick an achievement.

Three quick points

Feb 19, 2021, 6:25 PM

1) Clemson's team in 2018 led by CW42 & Power Rangers was our best all-time team. The past two teams have been good but not great.
2) Trevor has the goods. WRU has not been WRU the past two years.
3) ESPN is not what it used to be.

Re: Three quick points

Feb 19, 2021, 7:38 PM

Not so fast my friend. We were fortunate to watch the 81 team and had great seats for the Orange Bowl through a friend on the Bowl Committee and I say that team was better. All American, Hall of Fame and All Pro players all over the roster of the 81 team. Can't argue about who was better because that is like who was better, Jack or Tiger. It can't be proven either way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Three quick points

Feb 20, 2021, 3:18 PM

Agree 100%! We’ve been to all the championship games and we will never know. I loved Homer Jordan but he could not throw the ball like Trevor. Danny Ford relied on his Defense, and the Offense scored enough to win. The 2018 Offense was superior to 1981, but the Defenses were close if not equal.
Both teams were GREAT!

We have more talent returning and a better recruiting class than any time I can remember!
The 2021 team could be the best Clemson team of all time, but they have to prove it on the field.
Go Tigers, beat Georgia! That’s a start, just like 1981.....

Trevor is super legit, he's not the problem. The lack of offensive line recruiting and development is your issue and it's atrocious. Trevor and Travis were a top 5 QB\Rb combo in all of football, No team with type of talent should be getting blown out in the CFP, but never the less they were 2 years in a row. Got a ton of respect for Dabo and crew, but one has to wonder what has happened to recruiting OL for them to become so bad.

There is no such thing as a can't miss in the NFL because there are too moving parts. Clearly some teams are good, some not so good and some that are terrible. The upside to a top 5 draft spot are the millions of $$ but the downside is your team is probably one of the terrible ones.

Clemson great. This has become dominant in the recent past. I’ve been on the site since the late 90’s but never seen it as negative as it has been recently on Trevor Lawrence and DeShaun Watson by guys whose opinions are just opinions.
It’s sad that kind of negativity ends up here.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here is my take on this. NOBODY is a "can't miss" prospect.

Feb 20, 2021, 9:23 AM

Success in the NFL will always be a combination of individual ability, coaching, and the team around the individual. But, that being said, Trevor has as much individual ability as anyone to come into the league in many years.

I always hearken back to the draft where Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf were the two top rated QBs coming out. It really was neck and neck when people were trying to determine which of them would go with the first pick, held by the Colts that year. There were concerns about Manning's arm strength and mobility coming out of Tennessee. (Smokescreen, anyone? Colts management determined in private workouts that Manning actually threw harder than Leaf, who was widely considered to have the stronger arm and more "potential".)

History certainly records what ultimately transpired. Manning is in the NFL Hall of Fame, while Leaf threw almost as many balls to the other team as his own, was in trouble almost from the draft onward, often injured, and had such a poor work ethic that players of the status of Junior Seau begged management to get rid of him. He lasted only three seasons with the Chargers. He would eventually do prison time for burglary, theft, and drug charges, stemming from opioid abuse.

He admitted in later years that he was just too immature for the NFL when he was drafted, and the results certainly showed it.

Assuming Trevor is drafted by Jacksonville, he is going into a MUCH better situation than either Manning or Leaf had coming out of college. If he is not successful, it will certainly not be because he was immature or not physically ready. My money is on him being in Canton one day in the distant future.

Re: TNET: ESPN analyst not sold on Trevor Lawrence as a "can't miss" prospect

Feb 20, 2021, 10:22 AM

Who even is this guy? Never heard of him.

These clowns that think the QB is everything and the only thing are unbelievable. Did Trevor play in the OL, too? Was he playing on defense? Who stopped the ohio State offense? Was that TL? Did he play either in the line or at safety against LSU?

Come on, this is why I never listen to talking heads on ESPN. They are as dumb as that SEC homer Paul Finebaum.

Now, Trevor could be a turd like the Mannings and Elway and refuse to play for Jacksonville. Probably, he should do that. Urban Meyer will quit pretty soon claiming he's ill and they will start over and over again.
Look at how dumb that organization is. A blind rat could tell you that Leonard Fournette is a good player and the Super Bowl proved that. They let him go claiming he was a bust. I kind of feel bad that Trevor Lawrence, one of my all time favorite players, has to go to that awful team. Much like Watson in Houston. What has Houston ever done? Now, Watson is the bad guy for wanting to play on a team that has a shot.

ESPN is good for showing games, but their 'analysts' don't always know a dang thing and this guy may be one of those guys.

Feb 21, 2021, 7:46 PM

Few prospects if any are ever "can't miss." Look at Andrew Luck and Jadaveon Clowney. Neither had the career that anybody expected. Most guys who are highly touted have an average career at best. It goes the other way too, Tom Brady was a 6th round pick and even at #10, Patrick Mahomes looks like he should have been #1(even though I think time will be the true judge of his career.) Despite what Ryan Clark's ###### tells him to say to generate conversation, Trevor Lawrence is the Unanimous #1 Pick and will likely land with a team that has no other talent and only win a few games in his first few years.

It also annoys me when people compare two Quarterbacks or two pitchers in a game. They're not out their directly competing against each other. Nothing Trevor did against Joe Burrow or Justin Fields had anything to do with them and vice versa.
