Buying a boat today.

Nothing fancy.
A 16' jon boat with a 40hp Evinrude 2 stroke tiller.
It's used and I'm buying it from another person.
I know how to check out a boat and all that, but what all do I need to know, regarding paperwork, taxes, etc.
I see that a casual excise tax of 5% is due on the sale price. What's keeping us from claiming a low sale price?
Any other tricks or things I need to know. It's up to date on its registration and all that.

Just your level of guilt in doing what is right by the government's standards, your standards, and the seller's moral standards.
Assume it hasn't been sitting, just make sure the bearings are greased if it has.

bureaucrats changed the rules to yearly registration and now can't keep up. Half of the boats will be running around with expired registration stickers next year.

you really only need a notarized bill of sale with the purchase price on that BOS.
you will need the title for both the trailer and the boat. sometimes it can be rough getting a title on the trailer, most people lose that part.
then get it registered.
have fun drinking PBR and shooting ducks.

and it went from
hay trailer
boat trailer -just to the launch
jet ski trailer - just to the launch
logging trailer
cattle trailer
it was a one stop shop license plate. I was always running around trying to find it so we could get it on the next trailer. Good times. Never got caught.
