I have two pin oak trees that the builder put in my yard 2 years ago. I should have removed them when they were ~ 1" in diameter. One is very close to the water meter and both are close to driveway and sidewalk. We all know what oak trees will do to concrete walkways, and water lines.

Anyway, one is about 10" in diameter and the other is about 8" diameter. I called 3 tree service places to come give me a quote; only one showed up (not surprising). $450 to cut both down, haul off the wood, and grind the stumps out 8" below grade.

I didn't think that was terrible price. So how bad am I getting screwed?

seems like a fair price

The only other option I see hear is to

Jul 23, 2018, 4:38 PM

trap 2 beavers.

Trapping license is $25
Leash for beavers should be 2X$20 = $40.
Kiddy pools for beavers to have nearby water = 2X$20
HOA fine for having beavers and kiddy pools in yard = $350

Total = $435

So really a comparable price, but you do have options here.

That's really not a bad option for some people

Unfortunately for me, my wife would have them monogrammed collars and they'd be sleeping in my bed before they even cut down a single tree.

luckily, no HOA, so I just saved myself some cash.

When I had my diesel truck earlier this year, I though about tying a chain to the tree to see if I could pull them out out, but I didn't want to end up a Darwin award winner

With all due respect...

I think you probably forgot a couple of items on that list. One, the beavers will probably cause damage to other trees, so you have to factor in that cost. Two, you cold chain them to the trees, but that will cost another 50 bucks for chain you can be sure they won't chew through. Either way, you're over the $450.00.

So I think that's a better price than you do, apparently.

If you can come up with a good story about the wood

Jul 23, 2018, 4:44 PM

19B will come and cut it for his dad to make pins out of.

And will probably charge only slightly more.

Price a chainsaw and one day’s rental on a stump grinder and wood chipper. If you come out anywhere close to that go for it.

But do I get a certificate of authenticity?

Jul 23, 2018, 4:47 PM [ in reply to If you can come up with a good story about the wood ]

I've had some stumps removed a few years back (2015)and it cost $150 then. And that was per stump. And I don;t even have a chainsaw anymore, so...yeah.

After figuring that 1) they'll cut it all up and take it away and 2) I don't have to do anything but pay them, it seemed like a fair deal for me.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For serius, sounds like a heck of a deal from here

Jul 23, 2018, 4:50 PM

I've seem some outrageous figures for tree removal.

Srsly I think to get it done right you are probably looking

Jul 23, 2018, 4:52 PM [ in reply to But do I get a certificate of authenticity? ]

at a fair price.

I’ve got a kid that helps me out with heavy yard work and he charges $75 to drop them and $100 to haul them (each) and doesn’t have a stump grinder.

Dude told me I could probably get it done cheaper

Jul 23, 2018, 4:56 PM

by somebody else, but... he showed up.

That seems to be the hard part to get ANY kind of work done.
