On NPR this morning they were saying it could even take longer than 14 days before you could see if opening up was a bad idea. These people need to work together and get their lies straight. Jeez.

They detected viral particles in the dog's mouth - that does not automatically mean the dog was infected (especially living in close contact with know infected people and eating off their plates). They isolated it on the furniture too - does that mean the furniture was infected? No veterinarian examined this dog and the family is just guessing they thought they saw a symptom or two looking back (and enjoying all the TV attention I might add). Reflects very poorly on the researcher. Creating a national scare with sketchy poor science. The family reached out to the press not the other way around - at least that is what I have been told.

Then you get it, and one of three things happen.

1. You don’t know you have it either, and recover.
2. You get sick (varying scales) and recover.
3. You get sick, and don’t recover.

And they’re not equal probabilities. You’ve been taking chances on life every day.

Thats non sense, if people re walking with you and the tree falls on you and everyone else its the same useless argument, you are perfectly within your rights to stay in your closet the rest of your life, some people are willing to go back out into the mean, angry, germ filled world and get on with life... its been like this since the beginning of mankind. We stopped the potential of overwhelming our health care systems and its time to get on smartly with life... to include football this fall...

The story is #FAKENEWS, if you look at the Georgia reported data there hasn't been a 1000 case increase in Georgia in 24 hours ever, there was an increase of 500 last week, that number has already deceased to 33 yesterday and 9 today.

Look at where the majority of the cases in Ga occurred and what the source is, then make informed decisions on that basis not the mass hysteria... Fulton, Dekalb and Gwinnett counties are the hotbed of Georgia, basically Atlanta. they also had the outbreak at the meat packing plant (southwest part of the state), these are mostly migrant workers who work, live and congregate in close quarters.

You can look for yourself ...

That couldn’t be further from an objective response. My actions are mine. If a tree falls on my head and I know its likely, then invite others to walk under it, I’m negligent. You could even argue I’m sadistic with that analogy.

Like others, you’re assuming anyone that believes there is a lot more to understand before we collectively turn the faucet back on is part of some conspiracy or brainwashed to think Everything the media says is gospel. You couldn’t be more wrong.

Most of us are advocating for more and better information before the world abruptly returns to “normality.” Suggesting otherwise is myopic and negligent.

You should focus less on the useless metrics you reference and more on the bigger picture, which is you don’t, nor does anyone, have an actual clue what the entirety of this pandemic is. I happen to be among millions that are ready for the big bad world, but not at the expense of my Heath, my families or anyone I could potentially harm.

TBH, I hoe you and yours are safe and stay that way.

Re: Georgia CV cases rose to over 1000 cases in 24hrs

May 3, 2020, 9:36 AM

There is this entire class of events called "acts of God" that cover liability, now if you want to go trial lawyers and COVID and business liability thats a worthy discussion but your argument has no merit.

What more do you want? You want ID cards or little stickers that say "I was tested"? Not going to happen. If you would like to stay home and live within your 4 walls thats fine, don't heap your ideology on others.

I can focus on whatever I please, like Liberty over Tyranny... first you want to be more informed and then you want to focus more on the "big picture", the metrics form the "big picture" and they pretty much tell the whole picture. Where people are piled on top of each other the number of cases is higher, shocking, kids are very very low risk, older people are high risk (don't tell Cuomo), people with underlying conditions are higher risk.... things that would be stressed with a respiratory distress condition...

Your free to your opinion and I'm free to have mine, they differ. Enjoy your days of solitude.

You won't get sick if you follow the simple rules that have been laid out, the worst thing for a virus is sunlight, instant death... 6 feet of separation is nothing magical, it's the distance a virus would travel if coughed, a cloth mask will cut the down to a foot or less, a medical grade (level 3 or N95) will cut that to zero. Wash your hands with soap and water, breaks down the lipids in the virus and it falls apart, don't touch your eyes or pick your nose unless you washed your hands recently.... don't touch metal and then touch your eyes or nose, wash your hands... just because a person is positive doesn't mean you will be infected by proximity, take the proper sensible precautions and you will be fine and your family will be too. Did I mention wash your hands?

For some reason you seem emotional about my opinion, which seems odd given that I agree with you in part. Advocating for more information to a widespread problem where the metrics can’t, I repeat, can’t tell the whole story, is only logical.

You reference, “my argument,” well, you didn’t read. It was a response to another poster. Mincing the idea that there is a correlation between an “act of god” and a pandemic is simply ignorant. It’s laughable.

Yes, you sure can focus on whatever you please and please do, but there is no assault on liberty and there is no threat of Tyranny. There hasn’t been since the revolutionary war. Me, I’m not living in solitude. Not even close.

Be well and be safe!

May 3, 2020, 10:30 PM [ in reply to Re: Georgia CV cases rose to over 1000 cases in 24hrs ]

How about driving a car? Based on what I see daily, I have a much greater chance of being killed by these lousy drivers that I see daily than any virus can possibly do. Why people choose to constant ride on MY side of the road is unbelievable. Turn signals should be removed from some vehicles as they are never used. Swerving left or right to make a turn in the opposite direction seems to be the norm, regardless as to whether or not I'm in the adjacent lane that they choose to swerve into. And riding my motorcycle has become a true adventure, as most people do not bother to see you, and oncoming traffic usually makes sure they take most of your lane just to show you that their vehicle is bigger than yours.

So am I worried about the virus? Yes, but I also use common sense. Maybe it's time that our well-educated leaders learn to do the same.

your chances of being killed by a tree are about one in a million. your chances of being hospitalized if you contract covid 19 are somewhere between 10 and 20 percent. if you require intubation, you have about a 50% chance of dying.

Why are many ignoring that? The more testing increases the numbers of cases are almost guaranteed to go up. Until the amount of people being tested is fairly constant these numbers are mostly useless.

The 1232 new cases are spread out over several days on the DPH graphs and don't show up as a one-day spike. The only way to get context is to take a snapshots of these graphs/numbers each day to see how they get revised.

Scroll about halfway down for the relevant graph.

Re: Georgia CV cases rose to over 1000 cases in 24hrs

May 1, 2020, 7:39 PM

The more people that get it the better. Herd immunity is coming.

The real issue is hospitalization and death. As long as those numbers don't increase in a way that is statistically significant, Georgia is good.

People seem to have forgotten that the point of these shutdowns was never to stop the spread of the virus. No doctor or scientist ever suggested that would happen. The point was to slow the spread enough to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed. In all but a few places that has been successful.

I'm ready for NC to speed up the process of re-opening the economy. The cost of this shutdown on lives and health, not to mention the economy, doesn't seem to be factored in right now by very many political leaders.

People getting back to work > government handing out money it doesn't have.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep, rural and sunny places should have opened

May 1, 2020, 8:26 PM

yesterday. Most hospitals are underwhelmed. Wash your hands and don't have parties. I am not sure rural places ever needed to lockdown.

Keep in mind CDC never said lockdown at all to my knowledge. They just said social distance and wash hands. No mass gatherings. Politicians had a virtue signalling battle with lockdowns. We have had poor leadership on national, state, and local levels. There has been no clear and consistent plan or message.

It may not be The answer but it absolutely feeds the body's ability to build a resistance. Our innards have a way with that sort of thing, especially given the right fuel.

It's near impossible to think that most of us haven't been exposed at some point along the way. The hygiene steps, distancing, and PPE will go a long way to keeping it from massing up around us. We've seen how it thrives in incubator type environments. Let's be mindful of those, up the sanitizing of tight spaces, sample test in every community to track outbreaks, and get to it.

NC does need to speed things up - at least in the majority of the counties. I live in Cleveland county (100k population) where our total number infected since the beginning of the outbreak is 47. We've had only 12 active cases of COVID-19 since 23 April and less than 20 active cases since 16 April. Our hospital doesn't even have a COVID-19 patient in it much less being in danger of being over-run. There is simply no reason to keep Cleveland county under some stupid lock down because some particular city (looking at you Charlotte - Mecklenburg County) may have more cases. After driving around the county this past week it doesn't appear people are staying home anyway as all the retail store parking lots have been packed.

Governor Cooper needs to stop treating those of us in NC like his subjects and start treating us like equal citizens. We aren't going to put up with his idiotic decrees much longer when we clearly see the COVID-19 risks are already minimal in our County and can be mitigated by means other than shutting everything down....

That's what happens when you expand testing tenfold in 2 weeks. The rate tested are coming back dramatically lower. The truly relevant stat is # of daily deaths. Per below...
Thankfully, that is dropping here in GA. from 50 per day 2 weeks ago to about 30 now.

Re: Georgia CV cases rose to over 1000-Yeh Genius

How exactly is that the relevant metric? If you can’t quantify the probability of death, you can’t manage the risk. That’s what matters. It’s too late when a life is lost to care about a metric.

My question was rhetorical and has more to do with people’s disbelief that every person is responsible for helping stop the spread.

The truth is there are too many unknowns at this point to draw conclusions. That’s the one thing that is certain, which is why I’m not taken with current metrics. I’m more of the mind that we stay the course as testing availability and accuracy improves. That way, tracking hospitalization and deaths are irrelevant. I want the economy back as well, but not at the expense of my family and friends.

Be well Tabby.

Cases vs deaths

May 2, 2020, 1:35 PM

I would expect that virtually everyone will at some point be a positive test.
The question is - did the number of hospitalized cases exceed the medical capability?
Did the opening cause the deaths to spike? If so, how much?

Yes the flu and covid19 are different.
But also similar. Both caused a lot of death on people who are vulnerable. Those should stay in isolation or controlled environment. (At least in my family). Be careful, cautious.
The rest of us, a small amount will pass away. The question you have to ask - do you want to live your life worrying about something you have limited control over? Or do you want to live a good life with some precautions? Or do you just plan on not worrying at all?
The choice is different for each of us. I will probably fall into choice 2. Live my life, wash my hands more, but enjoy life.
I guess I could move to North Dakota and live on the side of a mountain until they find a cure, remedy. But, that takes me away from what I enjoy doing.
I am also a believer that the economic devastation of remaining closed will probably be worse in loss or destruction of life than the virus. Suicide, drugs, loss of housing, jobs, etc.
I supported some flattening of the curve and if in a hot spot, would consider more. But - closing of beaches, loss of fundamental rights, is a steep price for what “might” happen. Where does everyone think the money comes from to pay for stimulus, bailouts, unemployment- etc? Already huge deficits going up and if the dems keep adding more pork for things that everyone should have savings for - then double or triple it. Someday, the citizens will realize that the deficit must be paid back. I am 61 - clearly those dollars will fall into the people born 1990+. Printing money does not work.
Be safe, enjoy your life in whatever choice you make.

Jmo anyway.

Those cases were likely created well before the opening up. Every giddy reporter just waiting to write this type of trash. So sad Journalism is dead.

My friends and I have stopped social distancing and are living our lives as normal as possible and have been for over a month now. Contrary to what you see on the news from what I have seen out and about in Georgia a large portion of the population isn't either.
