What’s with wearing eye black under one eye?

Does that mean the other eye doesn’t receive any glare? If you’re playing indoors, does that mean one eye is more sensitive than the other? I am befuddled.

“Hey Dad, can I get an earring? I just want one, for my left ear. “

“One earring huh....are you a pirate now?”

“No dad”

“Are you half a feggitt?”

“Ok then, until one of those two conditions are met, no earring”
