"The Catch" (1977) Vs "4th and 16" (2012)

Jan 5, 2013, 7:07 PM

Steve Fuller to Jerry Butler to beat USC in a great come from behind win over the coots in 1977

Boyd To Hopkins 4th and 16 in the CFB

Look at the 49 second mark:

Which one is bigger?.......

This one is suppose to burn a bit...I am old enough to have witnessed both and they were both so incredibly huge......

I am going to go with 4th and 16 because of the national impact and the impact on our program...

NO WAY - "The Catch" will always be....

Jan 5, 2013, 7:11 PM

"The Catch" no matter what IMO.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The Catch started us on the 35 yr journey to where we are.

Jan 5, 2013, 9:59 PM

w/o the Catch, I an not sure there would have been a 4th and 16.

Point for the "######" ref!

Jan 5, 2013, 7:34 PM

I have to say however, I like the idea of calling it "The ######"...there's no way it'll ever be forgotten if that sticks.....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I still vote for "the catch" but vote "the ######" second***

Both were awesome. When watching the replay of the 4th and 16 play, look at how open Adam Humphries was. I was screaming for him before Tajh threw it, but obviously, Nuk was in a zone and Boyd made an incredible throw. Forbidden Fruit may have housed it though.

I still have to go with "The Catch"

I was sitting on the SCar side of the Cockroach with my then SCar girlfriend. All I can say is that Butler's catch meant so much to me that it will forever be my biggest Clemson moment.

Butler made that catch. She jumped so high she nearly hit the ceiling. It scared me, but our son made it another month before birth. I just told my son that story Tuesday comparing the Butler catch to the 4 and 16 in the Chic-fil-a. Now my son can see the comparison. I have to vote for the Butler catch.

So yes 1977 The Catch was bigger.

One throw won a game.

One throw allowed a game to be won.

Jan 6, 2013, 6:38 AM [ in reply to Most in here weren't even a twinkle in their Daddy's eye.... ]

I was four years old.

My only memory is being three rows from the top of the one upper deck in Willy Brice.

The fans were so bad at that game that my dad never went back for another game in Willy Brice.

I was a senior about to finish Clemson. Managed to talk to a hs classmate that attended carowhina to get me a ticket.

I've never really had any difficulties at willy brice. The closest I've come was sitting behind the drunk frat section one year. We won.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"The Catch" and "The Catch Two" will always..........

Jan 5, 2013, 8:11 PM

be bigger than 4th and 16 because both of those catches beat the hated coots at the last moment. Deliciously tearing their chickens&^t hearts out.

Boyd's toss has to be classified as a much tougher throw...

Jan 6, 2013, 11:37 AM

...considering the situation.

There were three LSU defenders surrounding Hopkins. Boyd had to drop that ball into an area about the size of an apple basket from 26 yards away! 26 yards!

Even though Nuk had a hold up slightly and cradle the throw from Boyd, if he had been led more by Boyd, Nuk would have been plastered mercilessly. Any less of a throw and Nuk cannot slow up and cradle it and the throw hits the underneath LSU defender.

This throw was an absolute "must have" throw. I do not recall what the down Fuller threw that pass to Butler. Was it 4th down?

At any rate, Boyd's performance on that play, while under withering pressure from the LSU defensive line showed Boyd's leadership, skill, and composure.

Boyd was as "cool under fire as a mountain lake!"

I label this "The Catch III", just so we don't take anything away from Butler and Gardner's catch to beat the dirt peckers.

Re: "The Catch" (1977) Vs "4th and 16" (2012)

Jan 6, 2013, 12:36 PM

Being 24, I can't give a valid opinion on which one had a bigger impact on the program. But I can say when it comes down to the degree of difficulty and sheer skill involved in the play, Boyd to Hopkins wins without question. Butler was relatively open and it was a shorter throw. Boyd couldn't even seen Hopkins when he let the thing go, and dropped it into a hole the size of a basketball hoop from over 30 yards away.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That win in 1977 put us into to Gator Bowl, the first bowl..

Jan 6, 2013, 1:19 PM

since 1959 Bluebonnet. That's when Clemson's national attention really started. Vote for THE CATCH above all plays.
