On purpose and because Drummond is a terrible free throw shooter. Similar to when teams would foul Shaq on purpose because there was a greater chance of him missing two free throws than making an easy basket down in the paint.

But they weren't shooting fouls and they were at the start of the second half so they weren't in the bonus.

they wanted to get the piston into the bonus shooting early and that was the way to do it. Just like someone else said, he is a terrible ft shooter, just like Shaq, and they would rather seen him at the line instead of shooting fg's
