They're all saying we've got the talent, we've got the fan base, we've got the facilities, so why is it 20 years between ACC championships? Interesting to me they pointed not to the coaches, but to a lack of players' leadership and committment to "bringing it" consistently every single week. They're very complimentary of our talent and depth, but sounds like Pollack isn't sold on BV just yet.

May 3, 2012, 7:35 AM [ in reply to Re: Football Update: ESPN: Top 20 Roundtable - Clemson ]

our #1 problem throughout the last 20 years. We're finally getting some, but we need a whole lot more depth on OL. IF the OL stays VERY healthy, we could have a nice run at it this year. As we saw last season, however, one key injury (Phillip Price) and we're struggling.

Re: Football Update: ESPN: Top 20 Roundtable - Clemson

May 2, 2012, 7:23 PM

Yes it was fair. And I think that if our guys will take ownership of the team, their team. Clemson will have a big win season. Its time for our guys to step up and swing for a hit every single down. Do that, and Clemson FB will arrive.

Nobody on ESPN is going to call out a coach on this show...

May 2, 2012, 7:58 PM

However, we sucked for ten years because of Bowden. Pure and simple. I don't know if Dabo can bring us to the promised land. I hope so. But, Bowden was NEVER going to do it.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Nobody on ESPN is going to call out a coach on this show...

May 2, 2012, 9:56 PM

I think that if anyone was going to call out a coach, it would be Pollack. He's a dawg and all, but I really like him. He has always told it like it is, at least about us. He's usually spot on, as well, IMO. Like Pollack, I'm not sold on Venebles yet, either. I think he'll be better than what we've had the past 3 years, but I don't know if we'll be a top 10 defense year in and year out. I think we'll have defenses good enough to win, but I'm not sure about elite. I'm guessing consistently top 30 with some really good years mixed in (depending on how long he's here). I guess we'll see. Oh how I would love to have an elite defense in Tiger Town.

GO TIGERS!!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Dabo has already accomplished more than Bowden......

May 4, 2012, 9:47 AM

I thoroughly agree, but the talent level when Dabo took over was much better than what Bowden took over. Dabo is a much better HC than TB, mainly because of his willingness to get rid of weak staff. TB was too loyal to mediocre assistants, and it was his undoing. IMO

Re: david pollack is our new ESPN fan boy***

May 2, 2012, 8:55 PM

It's surprising because he's a UGA guy through and through but he is on the Clemson bangwagon. I think we have the ability and talent to have a huge 2012 season but it is going to be up to the coaches and players to make it happen. I hope they can have this same discussion next season about a 12-2 Clemson team, back to back ACC champs, and BCS Bowl champs. That's what I want.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm hoping they're talking about a 14 - 0 Clemson Team...

May 2, 2012, 10:00 PM

with a national championship, of course. I'd settle for 12 - 2, though :)

Excellent Review Of Clemson!

May 3, 2012, 10:45 AM

ALL the players should be REQUIRED to watch this review on ESPN.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The main issue I saw last year was

May 3, 2012, 10:50 AM

that we became too predicable. We need to do a better job of self scouting. On certain down and distances do we have any tendencies? I think we do, we take our shot down field when we near the 50 yard line (which I personally like). But if I can figure it out, you know the other coaching staffs can to.

The paraphrased quote that sticks in my mind, is from the DB at GT. The interception that was thrown in the endzone, he said he was waiting for it because the coaches had prepared them.

I know we are going to change things up, different blocking schemes, different routes, etc. I simply don't want us to fall into a pattern. Keep 'em honest, keep 'em guessing on both sides of the ball!!

Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I saw this as well. Even as early as the Auburn game

May 3, 2012, 12:26 PM

Urban and the other dude were calling the plays from the booth. Now I realize Chad only had X% installed by that point, but still. I do think this was an issue last year, along with Tajh's inconsistency and lack of depth.

I think lack of depth on this squad is really underestimated. Everyone loves to harp on S&C but just look at Bama and LSU's rosters. They are stacked so deep they can easily absorb injuries and over the years I don't think I've ever seen a team "reload" as easily as Bama is able to do under Saban--it's just crazy. Even the Texas' and USC's (the real one) of yesteryear weren't as potent. If we can get our roster to even 3/4 the level of LSU/Bama then we should be a perennial top 10 team. I still think Dabo needs a little more time to build up the Clemson brand and bring this roster up to the elite level. We've got the skill guys, but not the guys in the trenches where it really makes the most difference. I think we're a couple of years away, personally.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I saw this as well. Even as early as the Auburn game

May 4, 2012, 8:25 AM

Best assessment so far with this article.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's pretty accurate, except...........

May 3, 2012, 1:08 PM

Clemson has not been as talented as these guys make it out to be. Sure, we've had some good players here and there, but when you're talking about elite level talent we did not have great talent or depth all over the field. That is simply not true. A myth.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We still don't

May 3, 2012, 1:14 PM

"all over the field".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Very true. We've never been loaded across the board or

May 3, 2012, 2:05 PM [ in reply to That's pretty accurate, except........... ]

with quality depth. We've had some great players (mostly flashy skill guys), but we've never had that complete team.

I know everyone hates the term, but our lines haven't been SEC-caliber. Sure, we've had some players that could play anywhere in the SEC, but the top teams over there just have incredible in the trenches.. especially the DL. We've haven't had that since like 1990.

Anyway, the notion that we've been loaded with talent simply isn't true.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Football Update: ESPN: Top 20 Roundtable - Clemson

May 4, 2012, 10:06 AM

No flaws in the assessments, and I hope our players and coaches would say they see the brutal truth in the discussion, as well. I do believe we are getting there, and I think our Defense will be better, in fact much better, under BV, and I believe the sour note we ended on will be a huge motivator for this team to move to the next level. I also think our OL will be better than it has been for the last many years. Really that has been an Achille's heel, and I hope it will be the offense's sustained drives for TD's that help make the defense all it can be.
