Ten regular season conference champions have already lost

Mar 13, 2014, 10:18 AM

in their conference tournament. They are: Vermont (America East), Florida-Gulf Coast (Atlantic Sun), High Point (Big South), Green Bay (Horizon), Iona (MAAC), Robert Morris (Northeast), Belmont (Ohio Valley), Boston U (Patriot), Davidson (Southern), and Southern (SWAC).

All have automatic NIT bids except Southern, because they are ineligible for postseason tournaments. That means there are only 23 at-large NIT bids left. (Clemson obviously isn't in any danger of losing out on one of those.)

Despite these upsets in the smaller tourneys, none of the upsetted teams are good enough to get an at-large bid to the NCAA tourney, so no bids have been "stolen".

Take, for example, Wichita St.

Mar 13, 2014, 10:56 AM [ in reply to Re: Ten regular season conference champions have already lost ]

Wichita St. was in the NCAA tournament whether they won their conference tournament or not. And for every other team in that conference, winning the conference tournament was the only way in.

So if, for example, Indiana St. had upset Wichita St. in the MVC final, then both Indiana St. and Wichita St. would be in the Big Dance. That's one less spot for an at-large team. So Indiana St. would have "stolen" a bid from a higher-profile team.

If the rules state they get automatic bid for winning tournament then I don't see how that is stealing a bid?

It's not "stealing" as in something sinister or illegal

Mar 13, 2014, 11:18 AM

It just means a team that wasn't expected to be in the tournament, all of a sudden is, and one less team can get in that was expected to.

a coot trying to teach a coot in the wild. fascinating.***

Still amazes me that small conferences have

Mar 13, 2014, 11:23 AM

conference tournaments. It nearly eliminates the value of the regular season in lieu of a few games at the end of the year. It can't be a money-maker, can it? All it does is make it harder for the most deserving school from that conference to go to the NCAA tournament.

As a Wofford fan, we have been on both sides of this issue.

A few years back Wofford was 26-5 going into the conference tournament but we still had to win the SOCON to make the dance. An entire season would have been considered a "failure" if we had been upset.

This year we were a 3 seed and I am not sure we could have beaten Davidson after losing to them twice by double figures. Davidson was 17-1 in the SOCON this season. But Western Carolina upset Davidson in the semis and we avoided the 1, 2, and 4 seeds.

Bottom line is we are dancing and that is really all I care about.
