Team's Identity?

Nov 12, 2017, 1:12 AM

We, the fans, realize that this team has yet to find its identity... Is it going to be based on Bryant running the ball 20 times a game while the receivers and running backs are mostly neglected? Are our linebackers and defensive backs unable to play shut down coverage so that we should just expect the other team to score 20-40 points by playing soft coverage and preventive defense??? This team has an uneasy feel to it... because I think Bryant has not found his confidence or his ability yet. The team is waiting on him to show them that he is a winner who rises to the occasion when needed... as Watson did again and again.

Not unprecedented 4 committee 2 replace a top 4 team after W

Nov 12, 2017, 1:35 AM

Just off the top of my head, remember back in 2014 when both TCU and Baylor got jumped by Ohio State on a weekend when all three teams won. Also, back in 2015 Notre Dame was in the top 4 and dropped 2 or 3 spots out of the top 4 after a win late in the season.

If anything, I would say that the committee has been consistent with the way that they award teams with wins over opponents with winning records and that are ranked in the committee's top 25 rankings. It basically comes down to strength of record (similar to strength of schedule only it takes the outcome of the game into account as well).

While ESPN's power index certainly isn't without its flaws, 11 of the 12 playoff teams so far have each finished in the top 4 in strength of record. That's why I was never concerned about missing out of the playoff after the Syracuse loss provided that we are able to win out.

We currently have 7 wins over P5 opponents with records over .500. No other team has more than 4 P5 wins against opponents with records over .500. Also, our win over Auburn is looking much better after they beat UGA today. NC State also won again, and while VT did lose, they lost to a team that we beat, so it should virtually even out if VT can finish the season in the top 25.

For the record, I think you're completely right about Bama that they will move up to #1. If I had to guess I would put us at #2, OU at #3, and Miami at #4, but I think it's basically a tossup between #3 and #4.

With that said, I wouldn't be surprised to see the committee have it Bama, OU, Clemson, and then Miami. Like you said though, as long as we stay in the top 4 I'm perfectly happy, plus we will get a chance against Miami to virtually guarantee a spot in the top 2, or even #1 if Bama loses to Auburn or UGA.
