Targeting

Oct 16, 2016, 1:59 PM

First let me say my blood runs Orange and has since 1979. But honestly how many times has targeting been called when a running back has the ball. And the reason, they're not considered defenseless. I'm not saying it's right or wrong. But that's a call that has almost a zero percent chance.

Just a question.

Isn't targeting also LEADING with the crown of the helmet, regardless of where the opposing player is hit ?

Targeting was introduced to try to limit concussions ...

... caused by helmet to helmet hits.

You can argue that that wasn't targeting because Gallman lowered his head.

But if the end is to limit concussions, then the means should be to stop hits like the one yesterday.

Hey I'm not saying it wasn't targeting. I'm all for protecting players from concussions. I've had 8 concussions, 6 from football. But targeting on a running back will never be called unless he's a defenseless receiver. It's just a call they won't make

Clearly the defensive back wasn't trying to make a tackle.

You can look at the video over and over again and you'll see the NCSU player made no attempt to tackle...rather they lead with the crown of his helmet to use it as a battering ram.

Should have been a 15-yarder and an ejection.

I agree BUT, when a defender launches himself like a rocket

Oct 16, 2016, 2:07 PM

head first with his head down and hits the the side of the helmet of the ball carrier with the top,of his head and knocks the guy out, then you call it.

This particular hit is a prime example of leading with the helmet and should have been called targeting. At no time did the defender raise his arms to wrap up the runner or appear to try adjusting the angle of impact. This was a straight forward hit with the helmet. Period. If college football is serious about limiting concussions then this is a call that should be made not only on the field but from the "review" panel. Just my opinion.

Quote "Noise proves nothing. Often a hen who has merely laid an egg cackles as if she had laid an asteroid." Mark Twain commenting on the Lamecocks.

The defender should have been called for "spearing".***

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Even if they won't call it 99.99% of the time

that was the prime example of the .01% when they should
