Cootie commits starting to hear from Ray Tanner Wait 3 weeks

Nov 20, 2015, 8:55 PM

and we'll announce a new coach.

By Phil Kornblut

USC athletics director Ray Tanner was an excellent recruiter during his days as a baseball coach at NC State and USC. He's now putting those skills back to work on two fronts...recruiting a new head football coach and recruiting the current 2016 Gamecock commitments to hold to their pledges.

Two of those commitments, OL Lloyd Cushenberry and QB Brandon McIlwain confirmed they had received calls from Tanner updating them on the search and encouraging them to be patient while it plays out. Cushenberry said Tanner called him Tuesday.

"He was just saying they'll be trying to make a decision in probably in about three weeks and he hopes I stick with them but still keep my options open and make the best decision for me," Cushenberry said. "I think I've built a good relationship with some of the coaches, like Coach Robinson, and I would like to be there with him. But we'll just see whoever they bring in. I am committed but keeping my options open, just seeing what goes on."

Cushenberry was supposed to visit Mississippi State last Saturday but that's been rescheduled for November 28th. He plans to set an official visit with USC and is also looking at Memphis and Louisiana Tech.

'I've been talking to Mississippi State and I really like them," Cushenberry said. "But I'm still committed to South Carolina."

Cushenberry's team is still in the playoffs. He is not going to be an early graduate.

Re: Cootie commits starting-Translation we have to wait

Nov 20, 2015, 8:59 PM

until after this season is over before we can hire anybody. Please don't screw us any more than we already are.

Tanner taking a cue from Spurrier and having to walk back

Nov 21, 2015, 8:34 AM

his remarks to the current regime not to take any more recruits. I think that remark has lead to some committed guys looking at other sure things. Tanner was a great baseball coach, but may be in a little over his head as AD. Holbrook, his first hire, is struggling and if Ray gets this one wrong he may be heading back to the dugout.

Any commit with half a brain has to realize that a new coach is not going to right that sinking ship instantly. It will take 3-4 years or more - and they will be gone by the time it is to their advantage to consider USUC. That is just an insult to their intelligence...oh wait.

OMG..so glad we are 7-8 yrs removed from that disaster!

Nov 20, 2015, 11:32 PM

While DaBO & Staff are sprinting for the NC trophy...Again!

How is the AD calling recruits not a violation?

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

Even during the "dead period" phone calls and mail are still permitted.

1. Have his team in a bowl.
2. Won't announce his leaving until after said bowl.

Glad the coots know what commitment means
"like Coach Robinson, and I would like to be there with him. But we'll just see whoever they bring in. I am committed but keeping my options open, just seeing what goes on."

It only cost the cockerel's just over $500,000
for a don't do this again from the NCAA last time
Any guess what this round of violations will cost
