Take it for what its worth

Jun 8, 2012, 7:08 PM

WFNZ in Charlotte has reported talks between SEC/Clemson have quietly been ongoing for some time now.

Yeah Mickey Plyler was pushing ACC to the Big 12 too. Let's just go win some football games. Clemson, FSU, nobody is going anywhere.

We might go to the SEC, we'll never go to the BigXii.

Im not so certain cant see us turning the big 12 down if they offer, just to stay in acc.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you're pretty certain...

Depends on what FSU does....

Jun 8, 2012, 7:40 PM

I wouldnt be surprised if the SEC made us an offer after all things shake out.

Because.....they don't already have a team in NC

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

here's the deal

Jun 8, 2012, 7:42 PM [ in reply to Depends on what FSU does.... ]

FSU and Clemson are Big XII bound... FSU will more than likely make first move, CU follows.

The SEC's first target is UNC, to get to 16. NCSU is a fallback if the Heels want to remain in a depleted ACC.

Why can't we take the lead?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

why would we?

Jun 8, 2012, 7:44 PM

CU has played this masterfully...

The media wants/loves FSU... let them be the "focus"

agree!! this is what I have thought all along.. but the Big 12 is MUCH better than the dying ACC

On the shallow surface maybe so....

the sec ain't that smart. we'd have to drag that mule to water, and stick a vacuum hose up his #### to get that mule to drink.

The SEC is certainly a much more natural fit in

Jun 9, 2012, 12:12 AM

both directions, especially in football. There are few gameday atmospheres and traditions that rival ours, and geographically the mix is ideal.

The TV market thing that so many cling to is not what makes a league a powerful draw. It's the climate of competition and the atmosphere surrounding the 3 hour telecasts that generate viewers. That's why Clemson football is such a powerful commodity.

It was really telling when the T-Net visitor from Kansas was on here a few weeks ago sharing his thoughts on us joining the Big XII. He didn't really know squat about us or even where we were located, but he knew the paw, and he knew there was a large and passionate fan base behind it, and good football to boot.

As digital media advances further and further, actual TV networks are becoming marginalized and the need for a school to be in a TV market diminishes more and more. If and when there's further conference expansion, it's going to be much more about fan bases, appeal, and common ground than cities and states.

It's late now and there's time to expound on this another time, but considering the Raycom / Swofford connection, I wonder how influential Raycom was in guiding the ACC's expansion philosophy based on TV markets instead of branding. A syndicator of programming such as Raycom stands to gain a great deal when dealing in market sizes when they're out selling affiliate TV stations their goods, versus a league selling national broadcast rights based on the overall appeal of its programming.

Re: The SEC is certainly a much more natural fit in

Jun 9, 2012, 9:30 AM

Agree.

I would add that if one does consider geography and TV, one has to acknowledge that while Clemson would not bring in as much of NC as NCSU or UNC, we would bring in a good chunk of Charlotte and everything west. Add to that a good national brand and one of the top 5 game day atmospheres and fan bases. So even if we do over emphasize TV and geography, it is still hard to dismiss the Clemson to SEC scenario. At least that is what logic would seem to say. I suppose rumors with no demonstrated basis in fact say otherwise. Granted those facts may exist, but I have not seen them.

If we go, where? That is a big IF and the answer is speculation. I’ll keep my distance.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I suspect we have inquired to the SEC and that's what that

Jun 9, 2012, 11:47 AM

radio report alluded to. I suspect that there's more interest obviously on our part than by the SEC. If you read the "Mr SEC" web site (and they seem to be very close to knowing the thinking of the SEC boys), you get a real good feel that the SEC is not looking to expand further anytime soon.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Once we enter the B12, signing over the "grant of rights",

Jun 9, 2012, 8:19 AM

the SEC possibility goes out of the window. If Texas signing over the "grant of rights" locks THEM down into the B12, I KNOW that us signing them over is "locking the door and throwing away the key".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Once we enter the B12, signing over the "grant of rights",

Jun 9, 2012, 9:44 AM

Back to the same question. Who in the SEC is going to vote for a team to come into their conference and agree to take a cut out of the money they receive every year for that team to join????

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When you bring 27 million annual viewers to the table

Jun 9, 2012, 11:29 AM

and the Clemson brand, nobody takes a pay cut. If the ACC lost Clemson, that's when teams would start getting pay cuts.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

SEC membership is impossible anyway once we enter the B12.**
