Tajh and Sammy with autographed items for sale on eBay

Aug 7, 2013, 5:14 PM

"Clowney and Manziel are hardly the only players with signed items on eBay. Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd and wide receiver Sammy Watkins, Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray and Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron are just a few of the star players who have signed items that appear on eBay complete with certificates of authenticity."

Are they...

Aug 7, 2013, 5:19 PM

Consecutively numbered therefore indicating they might have been done in bulk during one sitting?

Probably something only an NCAA investigation could confirm.

Aug 7, 2013, 6:01 PM

Numbered or not, it only takes one as was the case with AJ Greene, to warrant the NCAA coming in to investigate the matter.

I'm wondering what the Georgia game would look like without Boyd, Watkins or Murray.

Green sold his game worn jersey. Way different than signing a ball or a picture and having some guy sell it later.

Most of those are from people who visit fan days and get the autographs. However, unless I am mistaken, any autograph is ok as long as you do not receive a payment of any type.

having only a limited number of pieces....

Aug 7, 2013, 5:23 PM

is entirely plausible.

Having hundreds if items signed and consecutively numbered is another matter entirely.

Although I am quite certain Clowney agreed to do this at no cost and out of the goodness of his heart.

Difference is Clowney was not dumb enough to let someone video tape him when he did it.

No...he allowed someone to take still photos instead***

Biggie, It's amazing how you will ignore simple logic to be able to believe your rival is doing something wrong.

The consecutive numbers you mention are the certification of authenticity from JSA.

If you are a bulk dealer you would submit your autographs in bulk to JSA to be certified. Obviously those certifications would be sequential.

Re: Tajh and Sammy with autographed items for sale on eBay

Aug 7, 2013, 6:21 PM

It's not illegal for someone to sell an autograph, unless it is the player selling it. So unless someone paid Sammy, Tajh or Aaron Murray to sign, there is nothing to see here.

Aug 7, 2013, 6:27 PM

if a player signs a football and someone else sells it, and the player receives no money for the autograph, then the player hasn't violated any rules.

Re: Tajh and Sammy with autographed items for sale on eBay

Aug 7, 2013, 7:15 PM

There are probably hundreds of current ncaa athletes who have taken money to sign autographs. Unless more stuff comes out I doubt any of them are punished for it. Manziel looks to have the worst case because of some things said on the video. Just being honest, I wouldnt be shocked at all to find out that clowney was paid to sign something. No matter what team you pull for there is a good chance your star players have gotten some impermissable benefits. The only question is in which ones get caught.

they were stripped of a title.oh yeah, they are in the acc, never mind.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've gone to a few shows to pick up autographs.

Aug 8, 2013, 8:49 AM

In 2011, I was looking for Tajh and Sammy, and found only one place that had them. I wound up buying all the guy had, which was very sparse. All told, I spent <$100 and got his entire inventory of Tajh and Sammy, which was 2 photos and a football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't see why it's against the rules anyhow.

Aug 8, 2013, 10:19 AM

It's the kid's own autograph. ### is the NCAA to say he can't make money on his OWN likeness?! I understand they have a right to make money from them as well, but there's a difference between being paid to play, and selling autograph rights the rightfully belong to the person with the pen. Sorry, this doesn't sit well with me at all that Manziel and/or Clowney are being persecuted for taking compensation for a tangible item. Same with Greene selling his Jersey, and the OSU QB that got in trouble a few years ago. It's not right for the NCAA to say these kids can't market their own fame.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The arguement is that NCAA owns thier likeness

Aug 8, 2013, 10:26 AM

So they can't do anything with it. I suppose similar to a mortgage on a house, in a way?

I'm not saying it's right, I just think that's the arguement
