TV hooked up to Direct TV Box sound problem?
Jan 11, 2018, 4:47 PM

50” smart TV about 4 mouths old and sometimes the sound goes out. I just turn the Box off and back on and the sound comes back. I can be surfing channels and some will have sound others do not. Each time I have to turn box off and on when no sound. This Happens everytime I watch this TV. Anybody have a clue what the problem is ?

Interesting. Just high level troubleshooting, have you ever tried turning the TV on and off instead of the directv box?
Does the sound also come back then?

I have tried everything I did the setup over and reprogrammed the box Sometimes I have to turn the box off and on 2-3 Times It’s very annoying, I guess I’m going to call DTV. See if a new box helps

You have to see each component as a variable to the problem (dtv box, tv and connection cable).
It sounds like your focus is on the dtv box, which is likely the issue. But you have to eliminate the other variables.
Next time the sound cuts out, power cycle the tv instead. Does the sound return when you power cycle the tv?

No the TV turning off doesn’t work just the box It doesn’t happen on Netflix just watching DTV

Which is why you test all variables before you call them, and document.
So you can tell them to send a new box, because you’re 100% sure that’s the issue, and don’t need to spend an hour plus troubleshooting a second time.

You've never called them before have you? There is no way in Hell they are going to just send a new box without the requisite hoops buddy....But thanks for the laugh.

I have never had a problem with them either fixing the issue on the phone or coming out to fix/replace. I have them at home and at the Lake and have 7 receivers. You have to go through the crap of a computer telling you he can understand anything you say... you want to be directed to technical services

This, and also if you’re able to speak competently and calmly about the problem and the steps you’ve already taken, you can usually insist (politely) that they move you straight to the stage of getting the box replaced.
I’ve successfully done this with directv and multiple other service providers where leased hardware is involved.

And you can confirm this by turning off/on the tv next time the sound cuts out.
If sound doesn’t come back on when you power cycle the tv, as CM Shack said, that points to the directv box as the culprit.
Hope this helps.

try a different cable (HDMI, coax, whatever)
if you have another tv in another room.. hook this box up. if it happens on a diff tv call direct TV and get a new box.
If it doesnt happen on another tv your TV is forked up

I have took the cables off the TV in the living room and switch them with the problem TV. It’s still doing it and the living room TV is working fine

I have a smart TV that does that sometimes as well.

Sometimes I use surround sound through a receiver and sometimes I use the TV speakers. The TV likes to think for me and switches the sound through the receiver when I am not using it and I get no sound. When that happens I have to go into the TV menu and tell the tv to use it's speakers instead of sending sound to the receiver.
Check the menu on the box and the tv wherever the sound output options are and make sure they are set where they need to be.
I have a Samsung TV and it thinks it is smarter than me... This usually happens once a week. (The sound issue, not the TV arrogance-that happens daily.)

Sling was good, Directv Now is better.
Both allow majority access to the coveted WatchESPN login as long as it’s not a regional channel or blacked out.

I've had the same problem. Changing channels and then going back to the desired channel usually fixes the problem. Still a pain in the butt.
