The behavior that we abhor from other schools is their insistence on denigrating the visiting team - not just booing and commenting, but the use of insulting language with their guests. We can all tell tall tales of such at UGA, UNC, USC, and etc.

The Tiger is only one of Clemson's mascots - one long neglected was that of the "Southern gentleman." And, for years, we behaved, on our campus, like gentlemen and gentlewomen, cheering our team while we eschewed opportunities to display unsportsmanlike behavior with our opponents.

Much has changed - but we could recapture the grand ideal of the "Southern gentleman." Not only treating our own with respect (coaches, players, fans, et al), but treating our visitors with grace and charm - and like we'd want to be treated elsewhere.

As for me, I will never "boo" the visiting team - that's time spent I could be cheering the Tigers. I will not antagonize my neighbors - and thus distract those around me from the game at hand. I will never act disrespectfully and without charity and understanding to our opponents, regardless of their colors.

Do what you will, but know that our reputation, once sullied by hooliganism and ignorance, will be very difficult to restore.
