Sunday sermon: A sack of arrows for Ol' Yeller

Oct 6, 2013, 10:44 AM

We start today in the book of 1 Kings: Elisha said, “Pick up the arrows and hit the ground with them.” Jehoash grabbed the arrows and hit the ground three times, then stopped. 19 Elisha became angry at the king and exclaimed, “If you had struck it five or six times, you would completely wipe out the Syrians!"

Now, just wait until Syracuse goes into Zero Coverage and let 'er rip!

Saturday, in the heathen dome of the infidels, we learned what is still a valuable lesson: Never stop swatting those arrows against the ground.

And when it comes time, you've got to shoot Ol' Yeller.

It is one of the basic tenets of Gee-Haw'd ... drive your foes before you until they fall, then grind their bones beneath the discs of your harrows. Leave nothing to rise in protest, except for the muted weeping of their women.

Thrash those arrows against the floor until nothing is left. And for the better part of the first half the Sons of Clemson did just that. Properly inspired by the braggadocio of Syracuse and eager to atone for a less-than-stellar road debut at State, we marched into the dome of doom and left no doubt who was in charge.

Then, we let up. I don't think it was intentional, nor was it decisive in the long run ... but it was palpable. You could tell that the team bent on orange obliteration had lost its focus.

For the briefest of moments ... actually half of the third quarter ... we gave Syracuse a reason to hope.

F*** you, Dabo! M***f***!

This cannot happen. Not in a game that matters. Not if the Sons of Clemson truly wish to reclaim the destiny that rightfully belongs to us.

I will not criticize the team for wanting that touchdown at the end of the half. Heck we ALL would have loved to see 7 more points at the break.

But if you're going to go for those points, rather than take the mercy killing available, you'd D@MN better make sure you get them. That little mis-step gave the Cuse hope and another touchdown before we got the ship back on course.

Against a team of importance, that sort of miscue might mean a whole lot more.

As it stands, we have much to celebrate after yesterday's pulping of the Orange. But there still is much to perfect.

Speaking of perfect, I hope folks caught the continued maturation of Dabo after the game. I was reminded of the exchange between King Ben-Hadad of Aram and the hosts of Israel. Ben-Hadad was looking for a fight, taunting Israel and threatening to come take everything of value in the kingdom.

The reply from Israel: ‘One who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes it off.’ In other words, don't let your mouth write a check your a$$ can't cover.

The battle left Ben-Hadad looking for mercy, his bravado destroyed and his army scattered. There's little doubt that Clemson could have inflicted far worse on the Cuse, had the desire to do so been there.

But people may wonder if we truly have that edge. When it comes time, will we be able to do what is necessary? Can we take our rifle out to the barn and shoot Ol' Yeller?

Can we pull the trigger?

We're going to find out in a couple of weeks. Certainly Florida State has no qualms about backing up over a possum they hit on the highway.

It is time for the Sons of Clemson to show that we are not always quick to take our boot from the throat. It is time to show the world that while we may take no great pleasure in drowning baby kittens, we are willing to do what must be done.

For the greater good, it is time to harden our heart to pity.

The next time the chance arises, keep pounding those arrows. Don't give Ol' Yeller a chance to become Cujo.
