Measurables blind NFL scouts too often

Apr 28, 2019, 4:31 PM

You dont have to be one to see what seems so obvious so many times.

Anyone who said Grady Jarrett would not be a good NFL player probably didn't see him play much. Yet because he was a little undersized, he fell to late 5th Round. Same thing with Mitch Hyatt. Talk all the measurables & position changes you want, but he's going to be a great NFL player for somebody. That's as clear to see as Johnny Manziel or Josh Rosen being terrible high draft choices.

Best Is The Standard

It's obviously far from an exact science, but there are a lot of people who have been in the business for a long time and they know the best approach. That's why they all do it somewhat similar.

Measurables blind NFL scouts(& college fans) too often

Apr 28, 2019, 9:15 PM

Same goes for college football fans over these 5 star recruits. Many have gone to college and done big things. My guess is more than half have not done a thing except ride the bench in college. Why, b/c their measurables were better than the rest coming out of H.S. But, college S & C programs can erase that physical gap between players.
Moral of this post: "don't be suckered into thinking every 5 star kid is going to be a difference maker"! If we don't get a kid; might be a good thing. Especially after you find out we either, didn't offer him or only had mild interest. The coaching staff has shown they evaluate talent really well.
Forget the measurables when you didn't have Hunter Renfrow rated higher than he was. He was all world at Socastee.
Trust the Clemson Football coaching staff over the rating system in short. They are about like Kiper and Mcshay. They only look at measurables and not: potential or what a player will be.

Strong disagree on this

Recruiting services get it wrong plenty but they are right more than they are wrong. And I love Renfrow but he was never going to be more than a 3* recruit. He was 5’8” 150 pounds as a senior. I bet if you asked the coaches they didn’t expect him to be nearly as successful if he was. Players like him and Grady are the exception not the rule. It’s a statistical fact that the more blue chip recruits you get, the better your odds of winning championships.

There’s always going to be players that outperform a low ranking and underperform a high ranking, but over a large sample size the better players you get the better you are.

You honestly think that more than half of all 5 star recruits end up riding the bench? There are some without a doubt, but for the most part these guys at least contribute even if they don't end up living up to the 5 star ranking. We've had several 4 and 5 star ranked guys such as Watson, Wilkins, D. Lawrence, T. Lawrence, Ross, etc... for each Hunter Renfrow during our current run.

Also, Renfrow didn't get a lot of attention by the recruiting services which is true, but our own coaches didn't offer him a scholarship before he got here either.

Two years ago I bet you were making the case for Ben Boulware.

Rosen and Manziel ....would never lump those two together.

Apr 29, 2019, 9:14 AM

One season on one of the worst NFL rosters top to bottom I've ever seen shouldn't condemn a kid as being a bad player. Dolphins won't be much better this season but they're set up really well for next off-season with tons of picks and the most cap space in the league. I say Rosen gets until after the 2020 season.

Re: Measurables blind NFL scouts too often

It's fairly easy to knock the process by taking a few examples of low drafted guys who played above their draft position, and taking a few examples of highly drafted guys who didn't play up to their draft position.

Obviously there's always going to be guys who exceed expectations, and guys who don't live up to them. I don't think you'd find a single NFL scout who would tell you that every guy drafted in the first round this year is going to end up being a stud, or that every player drafted later on or who didn't end up getting drafted has no chance to be successful.

When it comes specifically to Clemson players it works both ways though. Were the people who drafted CJ Spiller and Sammy Watkins with top 10 picks idiots as well?
