Strength of Schedule

Long post.... BEAT MIAMI.
Looking at our strength of schedule from a second level perspective really highlights that our SOS is not as bad as the record of those teams appears:
1) Wofford - OK, this is a gimmie, a bad FCS school currently 3-4. 2) App State - Currently 5-1. Was still a gimmie, but a good FCS school. Their only loss so far is to us.
Now here is where things get interesting:
3) Louisville - A 2-4 team, but when you look at the 4 teams (combined 22-2) that they lost to: - Auburn - #6 at the time, very over ranked but they also gave this game away. Currently 4-2 This is by far their worst loss. - Houston - 6-0 and currently #21 - Us - 6-0 and currently #6 - FSU - 6-0 and currently #9
4) Notre Dame - Currently #11, 6-1, and their only loss is to us.
5) Georgia Tech - A 2-5 team, but again, look at the 5 teams (combined 27-4) they have lost to: - Notre Dame - 6-1 with their only loss to us (see above), currently #11 - Duke - 5-1 and currently #23 - UNC - 5-1 and currently #29 - Us - 6-0 and currently #6 - Pitt - 5-1 and currently #25
6) BC - A 3-4 that blew one game 3-0 against Wake. Their losses (combined 20-5) are: - FSU - 6-0 and currently #9 - Duke - 5-1 and currently #23 - Wake - 3-4: A VERY BAD LOSS - US - 6-0 and currently #6
Long story short, when you break it down to the next level, regardless of record, the teams we are beating are not losing to chumps. The total combined W-L of the teams that we have beaten (excluding Wofford, but find me a team that doesn't have a Wofford on their schedule), teams that have beaten them is 81-11.
This is where the media bias plays in. This was the one good thing about the computer rankings that looked at the 2nd and 3rd level, which people just don't have time to do for every team, but I hope that the committee does when deciding between their top 6 to 8.

This was a very interesting analysis of "next level" SOS perspective. Really enlightening! +1!

the strength of your opponents' opponents is measured. Clemson's opponents' opponents are 76-60 by my figuring. (That does not include FCS Wofford's opponents.) That's a little bit above average.

That's probably their best shot at keeping us out of the playoffs: being SO BAD that when we beat them it doesn't move the meter...

Not only are they Sunbelt Conference, their D is highly ranked. Granted, you have to filter their numbers against the strength of competition, but they are way better than FCS.

Great post! An extra bump is that App St is actually FBS now. I believe they're in the Sun Belt and might win that conference.

In the last week or 2, Sagarin's SoS for us has dropped to 40th. He has the following top 6 (SoS in parens):
1. Alabama (7) 2. Baylor (105) 3. TCU (52) 4. Oklahoma (31) 5. Ohio State (68) 6. Clemson (40)
With a ranking of 6 and SoS of 40, we compare very favorably with the other top teams.
As far as the coots (SoS => 15th) and this whole topic are concerned, SoS matters only if you win. It's no great feat to go 3-4 against an SoS of 15. Anybody could do that.
