So....Oklahoma is already "in"?

Dec 2, 2015, 8:20 PM

I really don't quite understand the notion as to why the pundits say that Oklahoma is a given for the playoffs.

I understand that they have had an impressive run to finish the season, but we all know that they also had the worst loss of any teams still in consideration (minus the Heels, but honestly even with a win against us, they aren't going to make it).

How can a team with an awful loss get to rest and sit comfortably this week?

I'm certainly not saying they aren't a deserving team, but I also find it frustrating that we are going to have to lay it all out on the line in another game against a top ten opponent while they have already punched their ticket apparently.

I think the NCAA needs to tell the Big12, as well as independents, that conference championships hold utmost weight. I think these teams that get to skip a championship need to go to the back of the line.

tells you that the system is still broken somewhat.

Dec 2, 2015, 8:21 PM

its bs they get an extra week to rest up and watch film

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Is 5 weeks off really an advantage over 4 weeks?***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've never played the game....

Dec 2, 2015, 8:30 PM

...but I would think at this level every week counts. I'd sure like for us to have this week off to heal further knowing our ticket was punched.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One less game is.***

Yeah, but it's just a non-con cupcake that they

Dec 2, 2015, 8:34 PM

take out of the schedule. They play 9 conference games, same as us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

there is the fact that we only play 8 conf games but that is

Dec 2, 2015, 8:40 PM

Just facts though

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm counting the title game since that's what people

Dec 2, 2015, 8:53 PM

are holding against OU. They played 9 conference games and played all of the good teams in their conference. Their conference resume is just as good as any other contender. The only difference in their schedule is they only play 3 OOC games which likely means 1 less cupcake.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can we drop, say Wofford, and add another Coastal...

Dec 2, 2015, 8:59 PM

...team and then have the same argument?

Same total number of conference games, but one less week of game prep and game time.

I like that idea!

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not saying that they don't have any advantage at

Dec 2, 2015, 9:10 PM

all, but i think it's being overblown by a lot of people here.

Dec 2, 2015, 9:17 PM

On the bright side we get a extra week of press and another national game to show the Clemson brand in primetime.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

look at it like this we have played 10 straight..

Dec 2, 2015, 8:38 PM [ in reply to Is 5 weeks off really an advantage over 4 weeks?*** ]

about to be 11..would be nice to get an extra week to rest our guys legs up .

Dec 2, 2015, 8:22 PM

They have 5 wins against ranked opponents and there aren't enough teams strong enough to push them out this year

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because to bump them out you would either have to put

Dec 2, 2015, 8:25 PM

in a 2-loss champion (Stanford), or a 1-loss non-champion like Ohio St.

oh no I din't.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, to be a non champion they would have 2 :)...

Dec 2, 2015, 8:48 PM

....now that would truly be a dream!

Yep, Stanford jump them if they win this weekend.

Dec 2, 2015, 8:34 PM

Big12 may not have a conference championship but they do play every team in their conference unlike all the rest. I'm fine with them being in and sitting a week extra.

Yep, Stanford should jump them if they win this weekend.

That will never happen.***

Dec 2, 2015, 8:35 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FWIW had Stanford held on against Oregon,

Dec 2, 2015, 8:34 PM

Oklahoma would be sitting this year out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think there would be too much difference b/t

Dec 2, 2015, 8:37 PM

OU, Stanford, and MSU/Iowa in that scenario. Whoever got left out would have a pretty good gripe.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It would have been OU. 12 vs 13 game schedule

Dec 2, 2015, 8:38 PM

loss to Texas.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They also have 3 wins that are better than any win

Dec 2, 2015, 8:55 PM

Iowa has gotten this year. Granted it would be 2 if Iowa beat MSU.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It still all goes back to having this week off****

week later, or take an extra bye week, so that their last week of games was on conference championship saturday :) Or they could change the stupid rule and let them have a title game. I find it kind of hard to hold this against teams like TCU, Baylor, and OU year after year. I doubt they wanted Nebraska, Colorado, A&M, and Missouri to bolt to other conferences.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Starting a week later doesn't change anything...

Dec 2, 2015, 9:12 PM

I was worried about the life of our conference during the big reshuffle a few years ago honestly.

As much As I hate Swofford, I think he realized that expansion was the only way to remain relevant in the modern landscape of college football. We can argue forever about wether or not Pitt and Syracuse and Louisville add a ton to our overall resume, but the way I see it adding teams was necessary.

If the committee doesn't care about a championship, then why did we even bother?

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Was Baylor in last year when ESPiN said they were?

Dec 2, 2015, 8:59 PM

How about TCU, that was the only team that could knock TCU out of the spot.

Don't get me wrong, I think OU is a fine team but I'm not sure they'll merit a spot over Stanford when it's all said and done.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Let's be clear, conf championship games are the problem...

Dec 2, 2015, 9:15 PM

not the solution!

The big 12 has it correct. The ACC, PAC 12, Big 10 and SEC have it all wrong!

Before we had these mega conferences, each team in a conference played all the other teams so the SEASON was the qualifying playoff to get to the final playoff subgroup.

Now we have the season playoff, and a conf playoff (that can by the way yield an inferior conf champion) for some due to mega conferences trying to hoard $$ and THEN we get to the final playoff subgroup.

The NCAA should agree to make a rule that says no conference can have more than 10 teams so they can all play one another in the season and do away with this multi-divisional nonsense that we have fallen into because the conference land grabs for more $ and power.

I realize that $$ rules everything so this probably will never come to pass, but if you think about it, it is a better approach and then you can have the top 8 teams in the final playoff subgroup because they play one less game (that conf championship nonsense) in the season!

OK, my rant is over... ??

Go Tigers! ????
