One of the forgotten keys to the Clemson vs UGA game

Aug 27, 2013, 3:38 PM

is their kicking situation. To me, that's where the absolute clear cut difference is between the two teams. Both have great offenses, both have unproven defenses, if we have to settle for FGs a couples of times and get points on the board and they have to attempt 4th down conversions rather than take the points, that can make a huge difference over the course of the game.

When everything else equals itself out, Catanzaro may be the most important piece of the puzzle for victory.

how is his range if it comes down to a late one from long distance?

Good point. Nobody's talked about special teams and I think

we have the edge there given our depth and strong kicking game.

Either way, it will be interesting to see how that plays out. I hope Pinion has a monster game.

because of a hard nosed defense. I'm looking forward to our defense this year.

I've considered our defense a lot more than offense because we already know what the O can do.

Nobody is talking about the biggest key of all.

Aug 27, 2013, 3:44 PM

I believe to beat Georgia, Clemson will HAVE TO put more points on the board than them. Very difficult to see a Tigers win otherwise.

Are you old enough to be that corny? I mean it looks like you're trying to dethrone 74 or zett.

Special teams advantage

Aug 27, 2013, 4:46 PM

In my opinion, the special teams advantage may be one of Clemson's greatest strengths in this game. Georgia's starting kicker will not be playing. Richt is being coy about it, but the decision isn't his to make--it's a university policy. So the Dawgs will be fielding a walk-on kicker. Their return game was one of the worst in the SEC last season, and they've repetitively shown a tendency to give up big plays on special teams in recent years (look at the 2011 SEC championship game against LSU, or South Carolina the last two seasons). With Watlins returning kicks and a walk-on handling the kicking game, the opportunity for lightning to strike their special teams is very real. I think that factor and the presence or absence of turnovers may well decide the game's outcome. In a game like this, with a relatively even matchup talent-wise, it's not always just about offense and defense.
