Georgia has a crap nonconference schedule in 2021 (UAB,

San Jose St and Charleston Southern). Same boat as Clemson (Wyoming,UConn and SCState). Looks like both could have worked out some buyouts and a deal to play even at a Neutral site so each have a second P-5 nonconference opponent.

I say we stay soft Sept-Nov (it's not our fault), then go hard in the playoffs, late Dec to mid Jan.

Re: Georgia has a crap nonconference schedule in 2021 (UAB,

Jan 29, 2020, 3:54 PM

They tried to but couldn't work it out. Here is the story from TCI in May 2018:

"Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said Wednesday to the Athens Banner-Herald that it is unlikely the two College Football Playoff participants from last year will play an annual game, but there are a few options open where they could play a home-and-home series and it could start as early as 2021.

“I do think down the road you will see Clemson and Georgia playing each other,” McGarity said to The Banner-Herald. “I’m not sure about the frequency of it, but I do think you’ll see us play each other in the not too distant future.”

Clemson has been trying to find a big-name home opponent for its 2021 season for a long time. The Tigers are having an issue with getting a team locked down because of its upcoming matchups with Notre Dame.

Clemson routinely likes to play one Power 5 opponent, along with South Carolina, an FCS state school and then a non-Power 5 opponent as part of its non-conference schedule each year.

The Tigers play South Carolina at home on even years and at South Carolina on odd years, which means if they play a home-and-home with a Power 5 opponent, Clemson wants to play that opponent at home on those years they play at South Carolina so it does not lose a seventh home game.

However, here is the problem and the one that Clemson and Georgia are most likely trying to work around. Because of Notre Dame’s agreement to play five ACC opponents a year, the Tigers and Irish are scheduled to play each other in 2020, 2022 and 2023. Because the 2022 game is at Notre Dame, the Tigers are having a hard time filling that final non-conference home game spot with a Power 5 opponent because they cannot return the favor until 2024.

The good news for Clemson and Georgia is the 2024 season is open for both schools. Clemson hosts South Carolina that year and has two other home games against App State and The Citadel. Georgia has just one opponent on its 2024 non-conference schedule right now and that is a home game against Georgia Tech.

So Clemson playing at Georgia in 2024 is a likely possibility. However, Georgia more than likely will not be able to return the favor and come to Clemson until 2027.

There is a possibility for Clemson and Georgia to meet in 2021. However, the question is does Georgia want to lose a seventh home game and come to Clemson. The Bulldogs already have home games scheduled against San Jose State and UAB with their annual matchup against Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

The two could agree to play a neutral site game in 2021, where they both can receive at least something for losing a home game. However, TCI learned Clemson really is not in favor of losing that seventh home game because of how much home football games mean to the city of Clemson’s economy and the surrounding small towns.

“It’s all predicated by availability, dates and your opponents,” McGarity said. “It’s not as easy as people think it is. There’s a lot that goes on it. Our staff devotes a tremendous amount of time in scheduling.”

Clemson and Georgia are as natural as two rivals can be at least from a distance standpoint. The two schools are separated by 72 miles.

“I’ve said (we should play Georgia) for a long time,” Swinney said. “We’re going to play somebody like that every year. We’re going to Texas A&M this year, and then they come to us. We’ve played Auburn a bunch of times. So, I think that would be great.

“I’m sure they’re going to play somebody big every year. I don’t know who they play this year, but I’m sure they have somebody out of their conference. To me, it would be great for the fan bases.”

When Clemson and Georgia first started their colorful rivalry, they met every year from 1897-1921. However, for whatever the reason, they played against each another just nine times from 1922-’61.

But, that all changed in 1962 as the two southern programs rekindled their rivalry. Over the next 28 years, it became one of the best rivalries in the south as they met every year from 1962-’87 with the exception of 1966 and 1972.

The best years of the rivalry came in the late 1970s and ran through the ’80s. Both programs won national championships (Georgia in 1980 and Clemson in ’81) and were considered two of the best in the country.

From 1977-’87, the matchup became known as the “Eleven Year War” as nine of the 11 games were decided by seven points or less with Clemson winning five, Georgia winning five and one tie.

However, because of scheduling conflicts in Georgia’s schedule the series was dropped as an annual battle. The two played a home-and-home series in 1990 and 1991, 1994 and 1995, 2002 and 2003 and most recently in 2013 and 2014.

Swinney would like to see the game played more on an annual basis.

“You don’t really look forward to playing Georgia because there is a good chance you could lose, but anytime you step out of conference and you play Texas A&M, Auburn or whoever else we play, those are big challenges. But, that is how we built our program. I would have no problem with it.”

UGA won’t schedule Clemson regularly in football until UGA feels extremely confident that they’ll win 70% (and it might even be 80%) of the time. They’re cowards. So is Tennessee and so is Florida. Complete cowards.

I’d be in favor of dumping the coots. Playing the coots means absolutely zero to me. Replace them with a game that means something. To me, playing the coots feels like, Andy Griffith having bragging rights over an annual beatdown of Otis.

Clemson and Florida are in discussions...

Jan 29, 2020, 4:33 PM

about a home and away match-up.

The problem is Florida does not like to leave the state of Florida for OOC games. While they're open to playing Clemson, they want CLemson to come to Gainesville and then schedule the other game, with Clemson as the home team, at a neutral site like Orlando or Tampa which is NOT going to happen.

Re: Clemson and Florida are in discussions...

Jan 29, 2020, 4:48 PM

I can't speak specifically to their reluctance to play at Clemson but the Gators did open OOC vs. Michigan in 17. Since about that same time frame I think Clemson played two P5 programs OOC and on the road; Texas A&M and Auburn.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I didn't say they won't or don't do it...

Jan 29, 2020, 5:34 PM

I said they prefer not to leave the state.

If you look back at their schedules, you'll see that in the last 25 to 30 years (maybe longer), they've left the state of Florida to play OOC games only a handful of times (less than two or three times).

That 2017 game v. Michigan was played at a neutral site (AT&T Stadium in Dallas).

Bowl games and neutral site games notwithstanding, Florida has not played a regular season game against an OCC opponent outside the state of Florida since 1991 (Syracuse).

Clemson has shown ZERO reluctance to play P5 on the road. In fact, it's the normal procedure for the Tigers to travel away from Death Valley for at least one P5 game each season. Plus, these are typically true road games. Here's the past decade: 2010 @ Auburn, 2011 @ S Carolina, 2012 Neutral Site vs Auburn, 2013 @ S Carolina, 2014 @ UGA, 2015 @ S Carolina, 2016 @ Auburn, 2017 @ S Carolina, 2018 @ Texas A&M, 2019, and 2020 will be @ Notre Dame.

For starters, I'm not attacking Clemson. I'm pushing back on the idea athletic departments at other schools are "cowards." Since you brought up Clemson's out of conference road games, of the 8 road games you listed, 4 are against your instate rival.

Florida played Michigan in a neutral site game at ATT Stadium in Texas in 2017. So the point stands they do not like true OOC road games outside of Florida.

The Gators lost to Michigan 34-17.

If it were about the best football games possible, we’d still be watching UGA vs Clemson. Nobody outside of the Columbia’s, gets geeked up to see UGA vs coots or UGA vs Mizzou. Never have, never will.

Nobody outside of Georgia gives a rip about seeing UGA vs GT. Just like nobody outside of SC gives a rip about seeing Clemson vs coots. Here’s a win-win idea.

UGA vs Clemson, renew the 2nd greatest rivalry that was lost to expansion and greed. Sorry but OU vs Nebraska would top that list.

& coots vs bees. Just think, every other year the coots could add 3 or 4 more Waffle Houses visited, to their family albums & every other year the bees could dispose of mountains of Atlanta trash on National TV without anyone saying a word.

SEC requires 8 conf games plus 1 P5 game.

UGA plays UF at a "neutral" site and alternates h&h w/ GT. No way pols will let UGA quit GT, and GT is now an ACC weakling. UGA thus plays 3 teams that will play at UGA for $$$$$$$ and no return game. UGA plays UF and AU every year, 2 teams that were in the top ten much of recent years.

UF plays UGA "neutral" and required by legislators to play FSU annually h&h. They thus need 3 rent-a-wins to get enuf home games. With in-state rivals FSU and Miami avaliable they see no need to travel. UF plays UGA and LSU every year, teams that have won 2 and 3 NC games recently and have strong programs that finished in top 6 or 8 this year.

Clem is locked in with USCe, a SEC weakling. Clem plays NOBODY that has been strong in the last few years, since FSU & Mia went down. With the very down weak ACC, Clem needs to schedule somebody that has some athletes. Glad to see ND and UGA coming up. Without those, lose one and no chance of Playoffs.

"UF plays UGA and LSU every year, teams that have won 2 and 3 NC games recently" !?!?!?! Define recently !!!!

Georgia hasn't won a National Championship since 1980. For all you Rhodes Scholars at LSU (ranked 158th academically by US News), that was 39 years ago.

LSU just played for and won its first NC in twelve years. Congratulations on finally achieving something of relevance after more than a decade of sniffing Bama's jock.

Clemson's record speaks for itself. Five appearances in the CFP, four appearance in the championship game, and two national titles with wins along the way against Auburn (2), Texas A&M (2), Notre Dame (2), Georgia, Oklahoma (2), Ohio State (2) and Alabama (2) among several other nationally ranked opponents. Clemson has a CFP record of 4 - 1 and a record in the Championship game of 2 - 2. That record speaks for itself regardless of what you misguided corn dog cologne wearers think.

LSU is not the college football blueblood you clowns think they are, so spare us your rhetoric and get back to us when LSU is accomplishing something, he!! anything of note, more than once every twelve years.

Schedules are made years in advance with no way of knowing how good your opponent will actually be. We typically schedule two SEC teams and beat them. We can’t help it that we give them all L’s and drop their power ranking.

LSU has a 3-1 record in NC games, Clem is 2-2.

LSU has won more Nattys on the field than Clem, 3-2, and more in history, 4-3.

Just because your team is on a great 5 year run don't mean that college football is only 5 years old.

Any yes, Clem will get back to the Playoffs before LSU does, a BYE thru the weak ACC guarantees that. LSU has to fight thru 4 of the top 6 teams per LV odds to get there while Clem plays NONE.
