Oak tree in Memorial Stadium to be removed

DanG..oak made inside prettier, plus I donated 5 bricks below it for relatives!

Sep 18, 2015, 7:38 PM

Well, guess they will keep all the surrounding bricks at foot of Oak.

GoTiGs!

Cypress knees are made up of aerenchyma cells that help get oxygen in swampy areas. As long as the site is good knees will not be present.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hate to see that tree go.

Sep 18, 2015, 7:43 PM

Liked to watch it change over the course of the season. But alas, trees, like all of us, die.

Not sure what a bald cypress looks like, but it can't be as purdy as an oak.

Bald Cypress?

Sep 18, 2015, 8:18 PM

That's a non-native and is really out of place in the Clemson landscape. I'm not the type to scream about non-native landscaping, but that will be ridiculously out of place IMO.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bald cypress is very native

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not native...indigenous to the upstate.

Sep 18, 2015, 11:37 PM

Fine by me plant palm trees beside it too. ;)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Not native...indigenous to the upstate.

Sep 18, 2015, 11:43 PM

They should plant black locusts . Then some of the balloons would pop when they pricked them and the sea turtle doves wouldn't gag to death a year later down in Ecuador.

Sep 18, 2015, 10:59 PM [ in reply to Bald Cypress? ]

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yup. A coastal plain species in Clemson...yes

Sep 18, 2015, 11:48 PM

Doesn't mean you can't like em and want to plant em. In that location, I just prefer a deciduous native species like a red maple, which really does turn orange in Fall, to a coastal plain conifer. Again, it's just personal preference.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes I know some bald cypress do turn orange in fall.

Sep 19, 2015, 12:06 AM

Can be gorgeous too. Some turn doo brown too. They probably have ornamental varieties guaranteed to turn orange, which is cool if they do.

As long as the Tiger D keeps laying the lumber like last night, I really could not care less.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I agree......sorta

Sep 19, 2015, 4:42 AM [ in reply to Bald Cypress? ]

The Bald Cypress is a swamp tree. It would be out of place. However; up-staters won't know what it is anyway. Down-staters (low-country) will feel right at home with it. As one from a swamp area (Okefenokee) who grew up in the up-state of SC, I'm sure I'd take one look at it & think "What the hay is a cypress doing up here?" One thing is for sure though. If you plan to pull it up, you'd better get it before it's knee-high. Even one that small is virtually impossible to pull up. Try it sometime. You could win some money on it if you find somebody dumb enough to bet you that they can pull it up.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't get it. If they are adding more accesible seating in

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: An idea! Auction off sections for a good cause!

Sep 19, 2015, 9:12 AM

That is a great idea. Carvings and furniture from the white oak of death valley could make a lot of money for scholarships or another good cause. Heck, I would even buy a short branch and leaves for a few bucks and mount it in a box.

Tree in the stadium was iconic and unique

Good grief - I had no idea that I had so little knowledge about trees.

They're not getting rid of any computers are they? Do they still have that ol' IBM360 that we used? And are the punch cards still used? And the green-bar paper for the printers? I'd hate to see any of those go.

I am disappointed that the tree has to be removed as well. I hated losing the tree that was where the band sits. These trees and our Green Grass Hill have helped make our stadium so much more attractive than the "bowls" that so are prevalent on so many college campuses.
