South Carolina has had more success than usual vs

Jun 18, 2012, 4:22 PM

Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida in recent years. Though they have wiffed on winning a conference championship, they have experienced perhaps the best three years in their history 7-6, 9-5 and 11-2 with one bowl win and bowl losses to Connecticut and FSU.

Like it or not, this incredible three year run is largely due to Steve Spurrier being in charge. The reality remains, however, that in spite of this recent success, South Carolina's series records vs the following teams are listed below. When Spurrier leaves and they begin trending back to these numbers, what's to keep them from becoming a permanent Ole Miss, Miss State, or Kentucky like they were for the first 22 years in the SEC?

Alabama 3-12
Arkansas 7-13
Auburn 1-9-1
Florida 6-23-3
Georgia 16-46-2
LSU 2-16-1
Tennessee 6-22-2
Clemson 40-65-4 lost 6 of 10, 15 of 20, 17 of 24

Should be lost 6 of last 10, 10 of last 15 and 17 of 24 vs

Can you please post Clemson winning percentages over these same teams? Let's show these guys what the numbers should look like for a REAL team.

you better be careful what you ask for, you might not like the answer. For most of our football history, we were SEC teams cupcake game which we played because we needed the $$$

You missed the point. And though we have recently held our

own vs Tennessee, Auburn and won 6 of last 10, 10 of last 15 and 17 of last 24 vs South Carolina, the point is we don't have to play these teams year in and year out. South Carolina will have to. We have to play FSU, VT, Miami, and South Carolina and we have certainly put up better numbers there than Scarolina has against their deal.

Also any lopsided series records vs SEC teams is due to most games Clemson played against those teams took place decades ago when the ACC definitely was not on an even playing field academically and scholarship-wise. South Carolina has been playing these teams the last 23 years on an even playing fiels. And by the way they are 7-17 vs Clemson during those years.

So it is not looking good for them when Spurrier leave.

I think your reasoning is off- and misses

mostly.

What we will be after Spurrier leaves is a guess. No one knows the future even though many on here think they do (until they are wrong of course).

Winning games builds a program up- and makes it more attractive in the future for young kids.

Kids that are 10,11, 12 now - or 13, 14 now - all they may ever know is that South Carolina is a pretty good football program with some very good players.

When you are winning fairly consistently, it can build upon itself. Kids want to go play for the team they saw winning some of those games. Or they want to go play where Clowney played, or Marcus Lattimore played.

Much like Clemson has been able to land some kids from Florida because CJ Spiller went to Clemson. CJ never won an ACC title. There were some down moments in his career at Clemson. But kids saw that he went there and they liked him and that got them interested.

That happens at other schools too- not just Clemson.

Do we have a crystal ball to tell us who their AD will

eventually hire? The guy is an ex-football coach who apparently knows football coaching talent (he hired Gary Patterson at TCU). My point is you know what they say when one "assumes"?

Let's focus on Clemson to make Clemson the best we can be. We have no control over what they do or don't do.

No one on Tnet ever imagined we'd finish number 8 in the

nation, under ANY circumstances. The way our current recruiting class is shaping up, we are on track to put together the best ever consecutive recruiting classes over a 3 year stretch in our history. No one can predict the future with certainty. Predictions are difficult, especially about the future, according to philosopher Yogi Berra.

Interesting I wonder how Clemson matches up against those

same teams?

Alabama 2-12
Arkansas 0-0
Auburn 12-33
Florida 3-9
Georgia 15-38
LSU 0-2
Tennessee 6-11
SC 65-40 0 of 3

Re: Mostly from a time before academic standards were

forced (sorta) upon the SEC schools (ca. 1975).

The interesting thing about this, is that most of USC's losses to SEC schools have occurred since joining the conference, whereas most of Clemson's occurred before 1975, when the ACC's academic standards/scholarship limits were forced upon the SEC et al.

It's not as if USC had some history of playing these schools. I have appliances older than their history of losing to most of the SEC schools.

Really? You gotta try harder than that.

Same could be said for Dabo before he hired Morris last year***
