Not sure what there is to say about this information

Dec 23, 2017, 9:13 PM

but, while discussing Toledo earlier tonight, as usual, the origin of their minor league baseball team’s mascot, the Mud Hens, came up.

from Mud Hens team website -
“The nickname Mud Hens first arose in 1896......The park was surrounded by a marshland that was home to strange birds called American Coots, whose guttural clucks and grunts could be heard during games. These birds have also been known as marsh hens, rails -- and mud hens.”

Yep. It’s a Coot.

Toledo has a whole lot better reputation than Cola.

If I were a coot, I think I'd rather be called a mud hen than a ####. But that's just me.

poor Toledo, @71PR and @Cheeseburger38, but my brain won’t abide any sympathy for the whole state of Ohio.

I must be a bad person!
It’s a bad bad time of the year to be bad.
Holy Toledo!

Sorry, never thought the term "coot" was nearly derisive enough nor sufficiently reflective of our necessary disrespect to the poultry. Nothing about a coot is clearly awful. I saw some in Hawaii and they were reasonably respectable birds, nor nearly as pathetic as our feathered #########. Let's start with dirtpeckers and work backward.
