So there was WMD's in Iraq after all...

Sounds like they had Dr. Mindbender working in there.

This was all covered the other day:

"The United States had gone to war declaring it must destroy an active weapons of mass destruction program. Instead, American troops gradually found and ultimately suffered from the remnants of long-abandoned programs, built in close collaboration with the West."

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/10/14/world/middleeast/us-casualties-of-iraq-chemical-weapons.html

A lot of this was in the Duelfer report ten years ago.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_Survey_Group

"Iraq destroyed its chemical weapons stockpile in 1991, and only a small number of old, abandoned chemical munitions were discovered by the ISG."

Just watched Colbert who had the NYT reporter on....

Oct 17, 2014, 3:03 PM

he said that up until 2004, these old weapons were well-documented but around 2005-2006 they suddenly became secretive. He didn't know why.

supposedly it was Bush's doing

Oct 17, 2014, 3:11 PM

he didn't want to drum up the old debate again.

The war was starting to become unpopular around then too

Oct 17, 2014, 3:24 PM

and the knowledge that many of these weapons were created with our help probably wouldn't have helped the administration's argument.

Isnt't that just another broken UN sanction?

Oct 17, 2014, 3:10 PM [ in reply to Sounds like they had Dr. Mindbender working in there. ]

Agreed that this isn't evidence of an active weapons program, which we thought they had. Still, Iraq was in pretty gross violation of the sanctions they were supposed to be following.

Security Council Resolution 687

Oct 17, 2014, 3:18 PM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Security_Council_Resolution_687

"The Council reminded Iraq of its obligations under the Geneva Protocol and to unconditionally remove and destroy all chemical and biological weapons and ballistic missiles with a range greater than 150km."

Maybe if they were short range he was allowed to keep them? In any case, this supposed discovery isn't exactly a game changer.

The worst part about this is the troops who were injured

Oct 17, 2014, 3:27 PM

and were not treated correctly, or still aren't.
