South Carolina fans can't forget 1984 loss to Navy that derailed title hopes

COLUMBIA — It’s been nearly three decades since Navy upset South Carolina, and it still stings.
Find USC sports tickets »

Former South Carolina quarterback Mike Hold said Gamecock fans frequently bring up the 1984 loss to the Midshipmen that ended their national championship dreams.

The Gamecocks had opened 9-0 and rose to No. 2 in the country. A win at 3-5-1 Navy would’ve moved South Carolina to No. 1 in the country and earned the Gamecocks a berth in the Orange Bowl for a shot at the national title. Instead, the Midshipmen posted a 38-21 stunner that has forever clouded South Carolina’s only 10-win season.

“I look at the fact that we were so close,” Hold said this week. “And one game blew it all.”

Navy has never beaten another top-10 team, something the Midshipmen will try to do Saturday against No. 10 South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium.

And while Navy’s chances seem slim this week – the Gamecocks are favored by more than two touchdowns – the Middies looked even more overmatched in 1984.

South Carolina’s football program is not filled with decades of titles and success like an Alabama or Notre Dame. The benchmarks are sparse: An Atlantic Coast Conference crown in 1969 and George Rogers run to the Heisman Trophy in 1980.

So in 1984 when the Gamecocks season – nicknamed “Black Magic” for the all-black outfits worn by late coach Joe Morrison – opened with nine consecutive wins over the likes of Georgia, Pittsburgh, the Fighting Irish and Florida State, they expected little trouble from Navy. The Midshipmen were without their star, injured running back Napoleon McCallum, and had only beaten Lehigh and Princeton in the previous two months.

“Your parents always tell you beware of the man who has nothing to lose. We had nothing to lose that day. We let it all go,” said former Navy defensive tackle Eric Rutherford, who blocked a field goal and had four sacks in the game.

South Carolina defensive back Brad Edwards, who played on the 1991 Washington Redskins team that won a Super Bowl, felt the Gamecocks players and staff took a loose approach to the game after so many difficult contests.

“I remember turning to one of my teammates and saying, ‘I don’t think this is going to be a good day.’ ”

Yeah, try to make the program that has owned you for 5 straight years look pathetic. That will be productive.

THIS IS SOUTH CAROLINA FOOTBALL

Following the 2012 football season South Carolina has an all-time winning percentage of .511 (566-541-44), which ranks 100th out of all college football teams having played at least 30 years since 1869 . A few of the notable “MAJOR” football programs who have been better than the Gamecocks include such powerhouses as: Tulsa, Utah, Minnesota, Navy, and Purdue, just to name a few. This is South Carolina football.

In the 70 seasons South Carolina has been affiliated with a conference, they have won that conference once...the ACC in 1969, with a 7-4 record. Since the Associated Press began ranking football teams in 1936, the ##### have finished in the Top 20 of the rankings only seven times in those 77 years. South Carolina has finished in the Top 10 of a major recognized poll...TWICE in 2011 and 2012, the best seasons in their entire history with 11 wins. In 2011 the entire team received rings for going 11-2 and for finishing a tough, hard fought 5th place in the SEC. As they say in tee ball, everyone is a winner. This is South Carolina football.

The first year of Gamecock football was in 1892, South Carolina won its first bowl game 103 years later under BRAD SCOTT. In 121 seasons of football, South Carolina never participated in a pre-BCS major bowl (Rose, Fiesta, Orange, Cotton, and Sugar) and has yet to receive a BCS invite. As South Carolina set to begin its 122nd season of collegiate football, they have won 11 or more games in a single season only twice. In 121 seasons, South Carolina has won more games than it lost only 57 times. In 121 seasons, South Carolina has won more than 6 games in a season 24 times, and lost 6 or more 38 times. This is South Carolina football.

South Carolina has had 33 different head coaches in its storied tradition...only six of them have stayed longer than 5 seasons, while 21 of them have losing records. “It’s another Carolina Touchdown!?”…not quite. Of the 56 programs, which have played more than 1000 games all-time, only four have scored fewer points than South Carolina in their schools history. This is South Carolina football.

Since joining the SEC in 1992, Carolina has had a winning record in the conference six times in 21 years. In the 21 seasons as a member of the SEC, South Carolina boasts a conference record of 72-96-1. Although South Carolina has yet to win the SEC, they have finished 0-8 in the conference twice. South Carolina has won six conference games in a season only twice. Only Kentucky, Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt have less 6 conference win seasons. This is South Carolina football.

Of the most memorable moments in their history is the fact that South Carolina went two consecutive seasons without winning one conference game. That’s right, not one. Carolina had an impressive string of 21 consecutive games with a loss snapped in 2000 by beating New Mexico State (and to let the rest of the country know what South Carolina football was all about, their fans commenced to tear down the goal-posts. No, I am not kidding). This is South Carolina football.

Since 1992, only three times has any non-probation member of the conference failed to win two or more games overall in a season…South Carolina has accomplished this feat twice, Kentucky once. Since 1992, only once has a conference member failed to win a game overall in a single season…you guessed it, South Carolina. South Carolina’s all-time record versus other current conference members is even more impressive: 3-12 vs Alabama, 8-13 vs Arkansas, 1-9-1 vs Auburn, 6-24-3 vs Florida, 16-43-2 vs Georgia, 15-8-1 vs Kentucky, 2-17-1 vs LSU, 7-8 vs Ole Miss, 8-6 vs Mississippi St., 7-23-2 vs Tennessee, and 18-4 vs Vanderbilt. That’s correct, Carolina leads the all-time series against 3 SEC teams...Kentucky, Miss St. and Vanderbilt. This is South Carolina football.

But, the comparison of only 21 seasons in one conference does no justice to the tradition of South Carolina football. Comparing the ##### record versus D-1A schools they have played 15 or more times: 39-61-4 vs Clemson, 17-24-3 vs Duke, 6-24-3 vs Florida, 16-43-2 vs Georgia, 9-11 vs Georgia Tech, 11-17 vs Maryland, 18-32-4 vs North Carolina, 3-16 vs Florida State, 7-23-2 vs Tennessee, 21-12-1 vs Virginia, and 34-20-2 vs Wake Forest. That’s correct, South Carolina leads the all-time series against 2 of these 11 teams...Virginia and Wake Forest. This is South Carolina football.

Gamecock fans justify their horrible football record thru the strength of the SEC conference. But let’s look at the Gamecock’s record against the other big 5 conferences. South Carolina is 158-173-15 vs the ACC, 4-7 vs the Big 12, 6-17 vs the Big East, 5-5 vs the Big Ten and 1-1 vs Pac12. This is South Carolina Football.

2003 was the season that the ##### would rebuild and compete for a SEC title with their consecutive top 10 recruiting classes. Yet, they finished the season with another sub 500 performance. That season ended with a 63-17 thumping at home from archrival Clemson. This is South Carolina football.

In 2005 a new era began for the Gamecocks as they hire legendary coach Steve Spurrier. They opened up their wallets (and another grave plot in their cemetery of washed up head coaches) for what surely would be the coach to get them on the road to glory. After 6 seasons under coach Spurrier the Gamecocks have yet to win the SEC and have seen 45 players and coaches arrested. This is South Carolina football.

In 2007 the Gamecocks got off to a roaring 6-1 start after beating #12 Georgia and #8 Kentucky. Surely this would be the year that all the Gamecock faithful had been yearning for. It was finally the “Next Year”! But hold the presses. After beating #8 Kentucky and garnering a rank as high as #6 in the country, those Gamecocks lost to lowly Vanderbilt that started a Gamecock trademarked “fall from grace” to lose their last 5 games and finish 6-6 for the season. This is South Carolina football.

The very next season, in 2008, those South Carolina Gamecocks got right back up and at it again beginning the season with a 7-2 record. But again those BCS hopes were dashed by a 56-6 #### whoopin’ from those Florida Gators. South Carolina would go on to lose their last 3 games of the season to finish 7-5. This is South Carolina football.

In 2009, with rival Clemson clinching the Atlantic Division in the ACC, the South Carolina Gamecocks had lost 3 straight and were sitting on a 6-5 record. When those Tigers came to town, those Gamecocks took advantage of turnovers and dampened the mood for the ACC Championship bound Tigers…. “Was this the end of the dreaded Chicken Curse?” the faithful coots prayed. But Ol’ Pitchfork Ben Tillman could only chuckle as UConn slammed the Gamecocks 20-7 in the Papa Johns.com bowl. This is South Carolina football.

In 2010 the Gamecocks got off to yet another historical start with a 9-3 record. They finally managed to win the SEC East division title. This is it! The moment that they had all been waiting for! The SEC Championship game in Atlanta! Surely a 9-3 East Champions would hang with undefeated Auburn in the Championship game! But again, Ol’ Ben chuckled loudly as Auburn pounded the Gamecocks 56-17. The Gamecocks would go on to lose the Chick Fil A bowl to Florida State 26-17. This is South Carolina football.

As starting QB for South Carolina from 2009-2011, Stephen Garcia had managed 3 arrests, 5 different suspensions and never missed one minute of playing time. In the summer of 2011, the reason behind Garcia’s behavior and lack of punishment became crystal clear to all the critics. An incident occurred that explained everything to those wondering how a young man could get away with so much. With Garcia already serving an indefinite suspension for violation of team rules, on July 26th, 2011 Quarter Backs coach G.A. Mangus was arrested in Greenville, SC after urinating on Main Street. G.A. was immediately suspended indefinitely by Coach Spurrier. Seven days later both G.A. and Garcia were reinstated to the team on the same day, just in time for the start of fall camp. This is South Carolina football.

The 2011 season brought yet another heart break for those poor Gamecocks. In 2011 the Gamecocks went 11-2 with a bowl win over Nebraska. However, they became the first collegiate football team in history to defeat all of their division rivals but still lose their division. They also became the first team in history to defeat all of their division rivals and finish 5th or worse in overall conference play. "But that's ok", they say. "We have our 5th place rings." This is South Carolina football.

In 2012, the poor fighting spurriers once against beat the division winner only to be left out of the SECCG. This is South Carolina Football.
2013 started out with a great optimism for Ol’ Ball Sack nation but was brought to reality quickly after a loss to UGA, who lost to Clemson the week before. Jadeveon Clowney, the best football player who ever lived, sand bags his way to the draft as he blames his 15 different injuries in the first 3 games on his lack of production. He is made fun of on nation TV. When things couldn’t get any worse, SC loses to a pathetic Tennessee team on a last minute field goal. The up and down season drove Spurrier to drink as he filmed a coaches show drunk. This is South Carolina Football.

Now, with another SEC East division loss and another non-BCS bowl right around the corner, the South Carolina Gamecocks will trot out to the field (Spurrier stumbling), in hopes of finding Glory. But we simply wait for another event to occur where we can smile, shake our head and simply say “THAT is South Carolina football.”

And here it is

Dec 16, 2013, 9:38 PM

Dear Coach Spurrier (or Coach Coors, whichever you prefer),

I wanted to gradulate you (I’m sure you still speak ‘gator,’ right?) on another fine season and a 10-2 record. It really is amazing what you’ve done with the program where great coaches go to die. And you own Dabo like you did Ray Goff. But, I mean, his name is Dabo. Mostly, I wanted to commend you on a feat that I am not sure has been accomplished in the long history of the SEC since we went to divisions (Admittedly, I haven’t really looked it up): You have amazingly gone three straight seasons with defeating the SEC East Champs while sitting at home the first weekend in December. I’m sure this is something you and the Gamecock faithful can be proud of. In fact, it sounds like a possible ring or stadium banner idea. Of course, I concur with you in recent years that we should really think about schedules and maybe another way to determine the division champions in our esteemed conference.

Whoever gets the easiest draw vs the West really has the advantage and seems to win the division. Wait, you played the two teams from the West (6-6 Miss St. and 3-9 Arkansas) with the two worst records? And Mizzou had to play Jonathan Tackle Football and Ole Miss? And UGA had to play LSU and Auburn? Oh, sorry, I was thinking you had a point there.
As you’ve mentioned before, really we should only count division games. Wait, you mean y’all tied UGA at 4-2 in the division while Mizzou went 5-1? Rats, I thought you had a point there, Coach.
You were right that it’s hard to raise a program up in the SEC and get to that SEC championship game. I mean, it was amazing how quickly South Carolina did it from 1992 to 2010, only 18 years after joining the league. And it only took you 5 years since you got there in 2005. Wait, it took Mizzou 2 years? I must be confused.
Maybe the division title should go to the team that tries the hardest?

In any event, you’ve raised the level of consistency in Columbia to new heights, and for that you should be extolled. What is truly remarkable is how you guys have consistently lost an inexplicable game in the last three years that eventually cost you the division title.

2011 – That home loss to a 7-5 Auburn team, who squeaked by Utah State on a miracle finish. By the way, isn’t Auburn the one team that owned you while you were in Gainesville?
2012 – A 33-point beat down to your alma mater, Florida, in a game in which Florida had 183 yards offense. No, I’m serious. That’s how many yards they had. And won. By nearly 5 touchdowns. Did I mention it was your alma mater?
2013 – A loss at Tennessee, whose only other SEC victory came against 0-8 Kentucky. Didn’t you used to whip Tennessee every year? Coach, I don’t want you to get down about this. I don’t want you to think about how that loss to that bad Tennessee team has cost your team a chance at being 11-1, playing for the SEC title, and a shot at a BCS National Championship Game birth. Coach Fulmer called me and told me to tell you to just forget it, and he sends his condolences.

We’ve had a disappointing, sometimes exhilarating and crazy season in Athens this year, Coach. But finally, I wanted to laud you for joining a distinguished group. In 2013, the Cardiac Dawgs only beat four teams by double digits: North Texas, Appalachian State, Kentucky, and the Mighty South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks. Now that deserves a banner in Williams-Brice.

Coach, whatever you do, I don’t want you to get down about this. I’m sure that some time in the near future again you’ll encounter a season in which Florida and Tennessee are dumpster fires and not bowl eligible, and you play the worst two teams in the West while UGA plays the #1 and #3 teams in the West while starting 78 freshmen on defense and ends up having 24 players tear their ACLs. And in that same season, I’m sure again you’ll have the best QB in your school’s history and the best defensive player in the country and your school’s history. I’m sure another opportunity like that is just around the corner.
