Was Lorenzo Ward the problem last year or was it
Aug 31, 2015, 3:56 PM

a lack of talent for the Gamecock defense? Spurrier seems to have made him the scapegoat after a little run of pretty good Gamecock defenses that he was a part of.
It looked to me like they simply lacked the talent, which is hard to change with one recruiting class. Not the usual confidence and bravado coming from the Ball Coach this preseason. Lots of uncertainty.

Lack of talent. Didn't seem like I needed to explain why considering it was one of two options.

Then why the need for a new DC?

So your first reply implies that a DL cannot be nonexistent due to poor coaching?

Are you being intentionally obtuse?
The OP only allowed you to answer from two possibilities.

I think he is pointing at the coaching aspect of your nonexistence up front, seems like the first thing you would want to fix.

Yes to both. bad coaching and no talent. His defenses got worse each year he was the DC. That in mind, I don't think the new DC is going to change that, not in 1st year. The talent still isn't there and most of their talent didn't qualify. Go Tigers.

I think both......even bad coaching shouldn't keep you from

getting more than 14 sacks for the entire season, but add bad coaching to it and you have players out of position and missed assignments. You saw it all from uSCjr last year.

Ward was just doing Dabo a favor...

He was a teammate of Dabo's at Bama, Dabo called in a favor for Ward to destroy the gamecock defense after Ellis Johnson left. Dabo is in Spurrier's head.

Coot defense got destroyed by everyone last year

Not just us. It was a combo of having poor talent, and having a scheme not even their HC believed in.

RECRUITING, Plain and Simple
Aug 31, 2015, 5:01 PM
|
|
The practice of Oversigning(bringing in more than you need and pulling scholarships of guys that have been in the program 2-3 to make room). There's high schools in this state that have always welcomed SC recruiters no longer let this USuC staff on their campus. Jones at Tennessee is approaching this is some schools.
Recruiting-Signing guys with questionable grades to try and get talent bit them. The 8-10 that didn't get in last year would have been contributing this year.
Slurrier, were today's kids alive when he was great in Florida ?
Again , recruiting. No Spiller,Watson or Watkins type talent from OUT OF STATE will come there.

Excellent points. Add to this also that Scar is just not a desirable place to go to school. It offers nothing which is distinctive. Even if a potential recruit buys into the SEC hype myth, there are still at least 10 or more schools in the SEC which are more attractive. And in state, there is only one premier big time school, and it resides in the beautiful rolling hills of Pickens county.
Money, famous washed up coaches, and endless wishing and talking can't change history or geography. Scar is forever to be stuck in mediocrity.

Some of both IMO but....

the biggest issue has been an inability to replace the players they've lost with equal of better talent.

well - if Ward was NOT the problem, then why did SOS bring in a new DC assistant? Are the cawks saying SOS is stupid did not realize that the players were the real problem?
If the players were the problem, then why didn't Ward or SOS realize this and get better players - or coach them up? SOS saying he was only going to coach 2 more years and running every recruit off indicates that SOS is an idiot and has no clue what the problem really is. The coot fans should tell him how to coach since they are certain that the players were the problem. Or - is SOS a decent coach and the coot fans just a bunch of dumbazzes? It has to be one or the other.
