Religion is a tool of oppression.

Apr 19, 2013, 9:33 AM

Muslims are currently better at it than Christians.

Maybe you can get something out of it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just wondering what you don't understand.

Apr 19, 2013, 1:01 PM

Not asking you to believe.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Like I said..man came up with both of those concepts.

Apr 19, 2013, 1:02 PM

Nothing "natural" about either one.

Just the inability to explain your surroundings. God must have done it!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And like I said, that's your opinion.

Apr 19, 2013, 1:05 PM

And do you have the ability to explain your surroundings?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

With some research, I'd guess a fair portion of it, yeah.

Apr 19, 2013, 1:08 PM

But what I can't explain doesn't mean that Zeus, Allah, Vishnu or God just made it "appear".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think you have any idea who you're talking to.

Apr 19, 2013, 1:17 PM

Albert Einstein said that to him God was the sum total of the physical laws of the universe. That's as close as anything I've found to what I believe. We are part of that universe, and thus part of Him. Which is why we've spent so much of our time constructing belief systems to explain our existence, because, while the truth is beyond our understanding, the feeling that we're connected to something beyond ourselves won't go away.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ok..enlighten me. Who AM I talking to? Are you important?

Apr 19, 2013, 1:21 PM

And why is any truth 'beyond our understanding"? And who has the feeling that "we're connected to something beyond ourselves"?

Maybe you need that crutch, but not everyone does. And just because you believe in something doesn't mean its true.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So you're actually familiar with the sum total of...

Apr 19, 2013, 1:31 PM

... the physical laws of the universe, and there's no mystery left. More power to you.

You're talking to someone with very unconventional religious beliefs is all I meant. But as for who has a feeling we're connected to something beyond ourselves? That would be the vast majority of people I'm famlilar with.

I respect the atheist point of view, more so than the traditional Christian one, in fact. I just think you guys are missing something too.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Religion is a tool for oppression

Apr 19, 2013, 10:35 AM

is analogous to saying a pillow is a tool for smothering people. I agree that man takes his own perverse desires for violence and hatred and tries to justify them through religion. However, these religious subsets shouldn't even be considered subsets but separate cults. I'm a little unclear of the details of the Islamic faith, but I get the impression that peace and non-violence IS a part of their creed but these terrorist use some quote/book to justify killing in the name of... Conveniently, our nation kills in the name of political defense that is separate from our nation's primary religion.

Look no further than the history of Catholicism

Apr 19, 2013, 10:46 AM

as the agenda and power of the Pope ebbs and flows, so does the theology of the denomination. How many millions have died under the Catholic flag?

is Catholicism a cult?

I think the current Pope will do an excellent job by the way. He seems to be a true man of God. I hope that is the case.

Others would say...

Apr 19, 2013, 2:01 PM

The state is the primary tool of oppression, while religion is a competing authority that can offer freedom from oppression. I wouldn't go so far as to say that any justification of violence through religion is a distortion of whatever religion you're talking about, but you can't just make blanket statements about "religion" being a tool of oppression without talking about what specific religions say and what particular circumstances are. Some religions give far more clear sanction violence than others, and some of those religions limit their sanction of violence better than others.

At any rate, statements like yours point to a pretty simplistic understanding of history and of the way politicsl theology differs among religions.
