But really, the characters are not gay, because they don't exhibit any sorts of sexual behaviors. The writer says they are gay, but he's just creating an extra fiction around the characters, that is not an actual part of their presentation on the show. Now, maybe the day will come when they do exhibit sexual behaviors on the show. That would make things different. Until that happens, this is just frivolity.

The article says that the people who created the characters don’t consider sexuality. Probably because they were mature adults. The article also says that a writer for the characters in the 1980s who was himself gay wrote the characters thinking of them as gay. Whatever works for him,that’s fine. He was a decent enough man and respectful enough of the show at the time not to introduce sexuality into a children’s show.
