So if NCST beats Miami the game today is meaningless

May 24, 2013, 11:43 AM

and the game Sat. vs Miami is meaningless to both teams. If UNC beats NCST in the final they will both be 2-1 with UNC having the tie breaker. I guess we are playing for 40 wins but it is sad when 2 of 6 games are pointless.

Agreed ... but that 40th win is not.

May 24, 2013, 11:44 AM

I want three more chances this season to go to BTF at DKS!

The game today is not meaningless

May 24, 2013, 11:46 AM

A victory over a top 3 team would be really big for NCAA seeding....

If I'm not mistaken, we were all but eliminated Wed night

May 24, 2013, 11:58 AM

as soon as we lost to State. We have to win out now and hope that they lose both of their next two games because we will lose all tie-breakers that involve State. UNC would win a 3-way tie at 2-1 due to being the highest seed, and State would be us in a 2-way tie due to winning the head-to-head matchup.

So to have any chance now we need the following to happen:

Miami beats NCSU
Clemson beats UNC
Clemson beats Miami
UNC beats NCSU

I hate this ridiculous tournament format.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The format didn't cause us to lose. The rule is the same...

May 24, 2013, 12:03 PM

win or go home.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, but the format is strange

May 24, 2013, 12:10 PM

I'm no fan of any tournament format where you are still playing games in the tournament with no chance to win the tournament.

The games are, of course, important to us. They will either solidify a hosting slot or make us sweat it out.

But the tournament format itself is far form my favorite.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The only positive to the format is that

May 24, 2013, 12:20 PM

you can go ahead and choose your pitching strategy. You don't want to wear anyone out before the regionals, when the games actually mean something. It limits you to playing a maximum of 4 games, where as a double elim tournament usually requires 6 games.

Of course, you could choose as you go in the double elim tournament as to how you approach it, but just trying to think of a positive.

Overall, I doubt Leggett really cares too much about winning the ACC tournament. He's only won the thing twice.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't dislike either format. At least the "strange" format

May 24, 2013, 1:26 PM [ in reply to No, but the format is strange ]

is in line with everyone's (coaches and pollsters) perception of the conference tournaments. Nobody cares. Conference tournaments are treated like practice games for those gearing for the big tournament.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you have a problem with double elimination tournaments?

May 24, 2013, 12:54 PM [ in reply to The format didn't cause us to lose. The rule is the same... ]

afterall they aren't "win or go home."

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No. What's your point?***

May 24, 2013, 1:22 PM

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So you have no problem with winning a tourney with a loss

May 24, 2013, 1:32 PM

but your exact quote was "win or go home." Obviously a team with 1 loss winning a tournament wasn't "win or go home."

We can have the exact same record as 3 other teams but we are eliminated because of stupid tiebreakers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If we had won, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

May 24, 2013, 1:41 PM

Only teams that lose have to worry about it.

Not sure how tie-breakers are stupid. We lost to them. And if there is a 3 way tie then regular season wins become important again...which is good.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If seeding is the thing, just have the top 2 play a series

May 24, 2013, 1:46 PM

for the trophy and the rest can take the weekend off.

If you are going to decide it on the field, decide it on the field. Not kinda sorta decide it on the field.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Seeding is the 2nd tie-breaker so obviously its not

May 24, 2013, 2:46 PM

just about seeding. I like that the seeding factors heavily, because the regular season should outweigh the tournament. Seeding is worthless in pool play, unless it factors into tie breaker somehow.

Again this has gotten off track. The point is, if you win, it doesn't matter. The ACC tourney is like a shortcut to getting a trophy as nearly every national tourney team is already one foot out of the door already. If they made the conference tourney only the top 6 seeds and gave the top 2 seeds byes I would be fine with that too. Hell if it was just a 3 game series of the top two teams, I would be fine with that too.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: So you have no problem with winning a tourney with a loss

May 24, 2013, 1:46 PM [ in reply to So you have no problem with winning a tourney with a loss ]

everyone is playing in the same tournament under the same rules.

We should have beat NC State so we wouldnt have to count on someone else to do it for us.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

null

that doesn't seem that improbable

May 24, 2013, 12:56 PM [ in reply to If I'm not mistaken, we were all but eliminated Wed night ]

probably he most improbable game would be Miami beating NC St.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe each game individually isn't that improbable, but

May 24, 2013, 1:34 PM

when you start multiplying the odds, it's extremely remote. Even if you said that each game was 50-50 (which isn't the case b/c UNC will be favored over us and NCST will be favored over Miami, the odds of all of that happening would be:

.5*.5*.5*.5 = .0625 = 6.25%

In reality, it's less than 5%.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, in the case of a 3 way tie, runs allowed becomes the tie

May 24, 2013, 12:36 PM

breaker.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Unless that has changed, that is not the case

May 24, 2013, 12:52 PM

I know when the format began in 07 that seed was used as the tiebreaker in 3 way ties.

I hadn't heard that had changed

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It hasn't. In a 3way tie the highest seed goes.***

and advance.

"In the event that the 2011 ACC Baseball Championship is not played to completion, the #1 seed in the championship shall receive the NCAA Tournament automatic qualification"

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's not like the #1 seed won a lottery. They earned it.***

May 24, 2013, 1:42 PM

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well this year they really didn't

May 24, 2013, 1:55 PM

UNC got the #1 seed because
1) The BC series moved to UNC
2) They didn't finish the NCSU series.

They took the #1 seed over UVA (which beat them in the series) by percentage points, played 2 fewer games and 1 extra home series. With the unbalanced schedules, FSU gets the #1 seed by a half game and they didn't have to play UNC while NCSU played UVA, UNC, VT and GT.

The seperation in top seeds is so minimal that it shouldn't determine such a large portion of the tournament.

If you want to use seeds and a round robin have it to determine which 4 teams go on to a single elimination tournament.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They had the best record... they earned it.

May 24, 2013, 2:47 PM

All other factors are a part of baseball.

Re: Wow its even worse. The #1 seed can pray for rain

May 24, 2013, 1:48 PM [ in reply to Wow its even worse. The #1 seed can pray for rain ]

They earned that by being the number 1 seed. I guess you also think it is unfair that the #1 seed in Basketball also get the theoretical easiest road to the Championship?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

null

Did they actually earn it, see above.

May 24, 2013, 1:59 PM

Face it, no baseball tournament ever determines a champion this way where tiebreakers play such a huge role in who moves forward. I'm sure you want to just simplify it so that you can bang on the coaching staff. But this format with these tiebreakers doesn't "decide it on the field" because so few champions actually go undefeated in a tournament.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Did they actually earn it, see above.

May 24, 2013, 2:18 PM

Has nothing to do with banging on the coaching staff that is not what I am doing. I am simply saying stop making excuses. EVERYONE is playing under the same rules.
