Franklin Graham's Letter To Swofford

[59]
Posted: Sep 19, 2016 11:27 AM

Dear Commissioner Swofford,

As a lifelong resident of North Carolina and current CEO and president of two organizations employing nearly 1,500 North Carolinians, I am saddened—even outraged—by the vote of the ACC Council of Presidents to move conference championships from our state in protest of legislation requiring people to use public bathrooms that correspond with their birth gender.

While I recognize this legislation—and legislation like it in other states—is complicated by society’s continued blurring of the lines of gender and sexual identity, I also recognize the profound hypocrisy of the ACC, the NCAA and other companies and organizations who are making calculated business decisions disguised as moral outrage.

For example, the football championship game your conference voted to move from Charlotte in December is called the “Dr. Pepper ACC Football Championship.” Dr. Pepper and its parent company, Cadbury Schweppes and Carlyle Group, proudly sell their products in countries where homosexuality is illegal. Will the ACC drop its title sponsor? And why isn’t the LGBT community demanding you sever ties with such a “bigoted” corporate sponsor?

Currently, LGBT relationships are illegal in more than 70 countries—including 10 where homosexuality is punishable by death. Dr. Pepper is often bottled under contract by Coca-Cola bottlers—yet Coca-Cola conducts business in virtually every nation on earth, including nearly every country where homosexuality is currently criminalized. Can your conference continue to tolerate that?

The ACC website proudly features Toyota as an “Official Corporate Champion,” yet Toyota maintains factories and distribution centers in several of these discriminatory countries, including Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Egypt. Where is the moral outrage of the presidents of Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, UNC, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest?

Indeed, the ACC’s member schools compete in 25 sports divided by gender—12 men’s sports and 13 women’s. Though gender issues may be becoming more complicated in higher education and other parts of society, the athletic conference you serve as commissioner doesn’t seem to have any problem distinguishing between the two genders—male and female. Yet, when a state like the one I live in seeks to make the same distinction with regard to use of public bathrooms in an effort to protect its citizens from those who would use the men’s room today and the women’s room tomorrow, the academic elites who comprise your conference fake a moral outrage that is frankly shameful.

Ironically, the NCAA is more discriminatory towards transgender people than the public policy they apparently wish to see as law in America. For example, opponents to legislation like NC House Bill 2 support permitting people to use the bathroom which corresponds to the sex they identify with on a given day—meaning someone might feel like a man today and a woman tomorrow, switching bathrooms at will.

Yet even the NCAA doesn’t allow such casual gender identity for participation in collegiate athletics. The NCAA Policy on Transgender Student-Athlete Participation states, “Any transgender student-athlete who is not taking hormone treatment related to gender transition may participate in sex-separated sports activities in accordance with his or her assigned birth gender.” This is precisely what supporters of HB2 have been requesting—that people use public restrooms in accordance with their assigned birth gender.

I think I represent the views of millions who would rather preserve gender-specific public bathrooms—a mainstay for generations—than to attend a football game in my state to determine the champion of a conference governed by politically-correct, morally hypocritical academics.

Commissioner, in your statement today you said, “the ACC Council of Presidents made it clear that the core values of this league are of the utmost importance, and the opposition to any form of discrimination is paramount. Today’s decision is one of principle.” Will this same paramount “opposition to any form of discrimination” have you now sever ties with Toyota or Dr. Pepper?

I am a big sports fan. My only daughter married a college football star that went on to play in the NFL. But I would rather defend the biological definition of the two genders as created by the Creator of the universe than to attend—or even watch on TV—a football or basketball game to determine the ACC champion.

Commissioner Swofford, you maintain your conference’s decision is “one of principle” and that “core values…are of utmost importance.” Well, millions of us who oppose your decision do so as a matter of principle and core values—values of privacy, safety and protection of our sons and daughters in public restrooms, and the principle that God created just two genders and assigned them at birth.

Please don’t make political pawns of student-athletes who just want to play football or basketball in North Carolina, and don’t continue to offend millions of Americans who endorse thousands of years of gender-specific bathrooms while you continue to accept corporate sponsorship money from companies proudly conducting their business in countries that discriminate against homosexuals to the point of death.

Sincerely,

Franklin Graham Signature

they down agenda...

your use of "bigoted".

Bigot is defined as someone who is "intolerant" of others with differing "opinions".

Clearly, this does not describe Mr. Graham as he is obviously not "intolerant".

In fact, one would have to suggest that Mr. Graham, and his forebears, have shown themselves to be personally

more empathic to the plight of others than virtually any other group in mankind.

I refer to their enormous and long-standing "charitable" work.

That's hardly "intolerant" of his fellow man.

No, Mr. Graham simply has a differing opinion than do others, obviously you, about "gender identity", just as you may have differing opinions than many others

about the Iraq War, the role of Welfare in our society, unlimited and unfettered immigration, race relations, et al.

Those differing opinions don't make you "bigoted", they make you thoughtful, hopefully, informed, hopefully, and guilty of having an opinion.

Are YOU therefore a bigot, sir? Or are you so tyrannical that you have to degrade someone else when they do have a differing opinion than yours?

History teaches one thing most have forgot - liberals make better tyrants than conservatives.

can you even respond to your failed use of a word, and it's real definition?

Society as a whole in a world of many different languages has always understood the signs on restroom doors. The signs of a Boy or Girl represents your sex, so where am I being lost in this whole gender thing and the HB2 law. The law as I understand it is saying, go to the sign on the door that represents the sex you are on your birth certificate. Problem solved right, no, and no because the sexes these days has decided to change their sexual orientation that had been decided at conception of their life. OK, change your sex if that's what they want to do, and after every thing has been completed, have the doctors to sign a revised birth certificate of the date the change had been completed. Then go to the restroom that fits your revised gender.

He simply called out someone speaking out of both sides of his mouth, Swafford and the ACC. I read the letter twice and didn't see him make a negative reference to any LBGT, transgender or person of color. He did bring to everyone's attention what seems to be a conflict of interest with the ACC. And he did also call out other governments that do not tolerate transgender or homosexual people. Franklin Graham stands opposed to countries that punish homosexuality.

Before you name call you should take 15 minutes from FGF and Tigernet to know who you are slandering.

So for those that disagree if Obama would have written this letter would you have been happy. If you are against the way the lbgt community is treated then you should be all in. He brings out some very good points for not moving it. I guess I should use someone other than Obama because he speaks out both sides of his mouth if and when Michelle lets him speak.

I read this drivel from Kelly James Clark. You cite this story from the Huffington Post. A liberal online rag that has less credibility than the National Enquirer. Nothing Franklin Graham said in his statement is bigoted. Because of Obama's impotent leadership and Totolitarian Socialist agenda, extreme Islamic terrorist acts continue to happen on US soil. Thus, Muslim immigration should be put on hold. The US should NOT continue to be the world's welfare state dumping ground!

Graham's point was that the ACC/NCAA are hypocritical, allowing sponsors that obviously do business in countries that have far worse views about transgenders. I totally agree with him. They can't have it both ways. Find a more liberal minded sponsor that agrees with their "beliefs" or get off the band wagon.

What a joke? Franklin Graham is a hypocrite!

[4]
Posted: Sep 19, 2016 2:36 PM

Has his opposition to gay marriage and transgender issues stopped him from using all the products of companies that support them? I doubt it. Has it stopped him from his Decision America Tour going to states that openly allow such things? Or going to those countries? Or collecting MONEY from people in them? Yet Dr. Pepper and Toyota must follow a different standard! He is one of the highest paid men from charitable contributions to his charity in the US!
Let's look at his statements:
"Well, millions of us who oppose your decision do so as a matter of principle and core values—values of privacy, safety and protection of our sons and daughters in public restrooms, and the principle that God created just two genders and assigned them at birth."
And millions believe that the law is foolish, unnecessary, and may not share your values. Is their voice not equal to yours?
"As a lifelong resident of North Carolina and current CEO and president of two organizations employing nearly 1,500 North Carolinians, I am saddened—even outraged.."
By August polls 43% of North Carolinians OPPOSE this law, 30% SUPPORT it. Now your 1500 employees are probably well paid, but do they equal the estimated $ 350 million NC is losing this year? How many Silicon valley jobs which were coming to the Triangle are currently lost?

"Commissioner Swofford, you maintain your conference’s decision is “one of principle” and that “core values…are of utmost importance.” Well, millions of us who oppose your decision do so as a matter of principle and core values—values of privacy, safety and protection of our sons and daughters in public restrooms, and the principle that God created just two genders and assigned them at birth."
This is the single most ignorant thing in the letter. First, not everyone in this country believes in the same God as Franklin Graham or any God for that matter. A sticky little thing called "Religious Freedom" makes that an unimportant issue. Secondly, a lot of us who are Christians don't agree. We see this law as an idiotic and unenforceable piece of posturing to the most Fundamentalist of our religion. And finally because of the way that HB2 is written, it accomplishes exactly the opposite of what Graham says, that is its fatal flaw. It PUTS MEN in the WOMEN'S BATHROOM because it follows what he says,"assigned to them at birth", which means that a person born female, who has gone through a sex change and is now MALE must use the WOMEN'S restroom because that is what is on their birth certificate.
And I don't think much of Graham, but then again, I'm a "Love thy neighbor" type Christian, not a "You're going to Hades if you disagree with me" type Christian.

So if it's not so important then why is the NCAA and the ACC making such a huge deal about it? They are hypocrites! I was wondering myself last week why they make a big deal about this but they do not allow a person to participate in a sport based on the gender they identify with.
The left is the ones intolerant!

So let me get this straight..

Posted: Sep 20, 2016 1:22 PM

protesting against intolerance is being intolerant. Welcome to "1984" "doublespeak". You both do it! The fact is that both right and left have intolerant members which is what makes either side protesting the other's "intolerance" absurd.

Don told me the next day that they left after 30 minutes and were never send her another dollar. I don't disagree with one part of this argument. America and American companies should have no trade, commerce, or negotiations with companies that have operations in mass murder and torture nations.

I really think dominance by our DL is going to be the difference in the game this Thursday.

Not so much a preacher but a religion CEO.

Making a lot of money makes you a hypocrite?

Dabo makes a lot of money, is he a hypocrite? How about Obama? Is Graham twice the hypocrite that Barry is or are they equal?

If he's twice the hypocrite then does that make Dabo five times the hypocrite as Graham? I guess Barry is the winner, right?

The last time I checked, neither Dabo or or Obama claimed to be ministers of the Lord. Or were making a living off Daddy's name and received large inheritances from Daddy. Nor were either one them running a RELIGIOUS charity and receiving 40-50% larger salaries than the norm from that charity in 2015 after taking a 40% paycut when the same question was publicized in 2008.(Forbes Aug.2015, hardly a LIBERAL source).

Nothing wrong with making money. Something wrong with the way that you make it! Graham milks millions from his charities for his own personal use. If you enjoy giving your money to a family like this thinking that it goes for 'godly' uses you are one big sicko! And to top it all off... the tax break is unbelievable. And some didn't approve of Jim and Tammy Bakker!

btw .... Franklins Porsche is for sale here in town if any of you fans are interested in a new ride

Obama makes $400,000

Dabo is a football coach.

Graham is a preacher who paid himself $1,200,000 last year from 2 Christian Charities; Samaritan's Purse and The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

He is a hypocrite for condemning other people's sins.

Ultimately he lacks any reasonable credibility when speaking out on moral issues.

who apparently can't grasp that PEOPLE WHO ARE NOW WOMEN want to be able to use the WOMEN'S BATHROOM. And yes, I know that the Charlotte law was protective of folks who had not undergone hormone therapy or gender-changing surgery. But the NC legislature went out of its way to write their nullification so as to target those who HAD done so. And the reason they did that? Because they're idiots. And now of course they can't back down because they've got their redneck all up in a dander over it.

Im so confused imma start peeing outside. Dont

mantra becomes downright perverted.

and to suggest that Billy Graham is a manipulator

may in fact be true to some degree,

though he'd never be so on anywhere near the scale

of a Clinton or an Obama or a Dianne Feinstein or a Mitch McConnell....

no, those are some real "devil's right-hand man" liars there

and they think it's OK to do so.

Christ, what is wrong with you people?

oh, oh yeah... it is Christ that is wrong with you....

Really epi..

you know Christ and the Apostles were the LIBERALS trying to change an old religion, the Pharisees and Sadducees that killed him were the CONSERVATIVES trying to keep the same old ways. And you forgot to include Rove, Cheney, Tom Cotton, Trey Gowdy, and Bush II in your group of liars. That crap cuts both ways in Washington.

HB2 is killing a lot of opportunity in Charlotte, NC

Posted: Sep 20, 2016 12:55 PM

I wish they would do away with that crap. I'm tired of dealing with the BS that Raleigh created.

there's no prostitution in Charlotte either.. that's $$$$$

down the tube too.

It's called blackmail, and it's the liberals main tool right now.

Economic warfare against anyone who doesn't agree with their perverted agenda.

I have a bad feeling that this will come down to another Civil War -

liberals pulling rights from people, stealing money from people,

until people get tired of it.

History teaches that once you make it about $$$$, the guns come out.....

It's not blackmail at all. It is sincere, thinking people who are opposed to discrimination acting under the color of the law.

HB2 is also an offense to working people. "Bathrooms" are only a small part of the actual law.

Yeah there is prostitution in Charlotte..

and in Jerusalem and Bethelehem and Mecca and Medina and every religious and non-religious city in the world so that point is not very good sarcasm. Oh only liberals use economic blackmail, I guess you missed the conservative memos about boycotting Target. Wells Fargo(that one was started by the hypocrite Franklin Graham who still accepts their checks and credit cards: announced on Facebook which is known for being far more liberal in their sexual and gender issues than Wells Fargo, but I digress),Starbucks, General Mills,PayPal(which again Mr. Graham accepts donations through),Disney, Heinz,JC Penney, Barnes and Noble(which sells Mr. Graham's books), Progressive Insurance, and amazon(which again, sells Mr. Graham's books). Perhaps I am missing something but the greatest attack on my rights in recent times was the bi-partisan "Patriot Act" which was sponsored by Republicans and equally approved by Democrats, signed by Bush and re-signed by Obama. So both parties deserve equal shame for that attack on my rights. And both parties are equally guilty of stealing money from me and everybody else in the Middle Class so I think you are full of it there too. As George Wallace said, "Ain't a dime's worth of difference". And I am thoroughly tired of both sides blaming the other and not working together for us instead of themselves. their agendas and their own profits.

You should educate yourself on the impact of HB2

It's not just about bathrooms.

in NC u can change your birth certificate

Posted: Sep 20, 2016 8:43 PM

So HB2 is a non effing issue. If u are xgender, write a letter, get new birth certificate, and use the bathroom.

Re: in NC u can change your birth certificate

But your neighbors in Tennessee will not. Nor will Kansas. And Texas required a 2014 court order overturning a law to do it. SC appears to allow it but really has no statute or law opposing or allowing it, so that is subject to change at a whim. And in many states it requires time-consuming court orders that can take months. NC is a major vacation haven and stop for people traveling to the beaches, so doubtless quite a few people travel through it, many of whom may be trans-sexual. And let's not even go into the other legal protections it takes away.
