One of Grier's OL is skipping the Cuse game as well.

Only the playoffs matter. All the other bowls are meaningless.

Barely matters to them either. The games are flat. It matters to teams like UCF maybe who never have a chance at the playoff on any year. Then they play a team like Auburn who just didn't care. TV ratings are down too. The Rose Bowl used to be huge, but not without the playoff there now. Things have changed.

The new norm. Most of the bowl system needs to die off. The fans have lost interest for years except for the games around New Years. Now even the players have figured it out. Once ESPN finally hits bottom, there will be little left to prop up this old system.

While I understand it, I’m not a fan of this trend. It’s as if as soon as your team is out of the playoff picture, there’s no need for your star players to play in the bowl game any more. I mean, technically they might as well sit out the last couple of games too, right? They need to figure out a way to make these games mean something.

ESPN and the playoff have combined to kill the golden goose.

In college football, just my opinion, that goose is called pageantry.
I used to laugh at the idea that there are too many bowls. But ESPN’s manufacturing of weeks of “4th place AAC vs 5th place CUSA in the company-you’ve-never-heard-of-that-will-only-sponson-for-a-year bowl” has diluted the specialness of the post season, then ESPN’s obsession of the playoff may have finished it off. Now Rashan Gary is sitting out the Peach Bowl against Florida (a battle of top ten teams) and a senior starting QB for top 20 WV will walk away from his teammates and leave their fate in the hands of a kid who has completed ten passes for 75 yards this year. Because “it doesn’t matter.” Geez...none of it matters.
And this makes some people mad at Grier and others say “I respect that he has to look out for himself.” But what the “i respect his decision” crowd has to understand is that you don’t have to think these players are selfish jerks to still see that this is very bad for the sport.

A sad trend. Over saturation of bowl games with .500 teams, and over promotion of the playoffs. I understand kids wanting to protect their bodies for the NFL, $$$ riding on it. Yet, did they not enter into a contractual agreement to play football in exchange for a free education. If you fail to play the bowl game are you in default. Then again you could always claim a pulled hamy.
