and will give Lip-service to AOC, Bernie, Liz, etc. before the election, and then move to the center to govern.

Possibly, but I can't take that chance. I have to actually

Jul 15, 2020, 1:42 PM

listen to what he says and writes about his positions and can't just hope that he's kidding the far-left.

His VP pick is going to be very telling, because if he does that, she will be the one positioned to take his place in four years if he makes it that long.

Adding to that, it amazes me how much Biden is "Trump Lite".

Jul 15, 2020, 1:50 PM

Here the argument (I think...correct me if I'm wrong) is that we shouldn't focus on what he says...that's just for show, or to placate a portion of his voting block. Pay attention to what he DOES...or in this case, what you think he will do.

This is what Trump defenders say about Trump's non-stop reckless tweeting and crazy comments. Don't worry about that...that's just a show...look at what he does.

Sure Biden is inappropriate with women...just less so than Trump.
Sure Biden has issues with corruption...just less so than Trump.
Sure Biden is an old white male...okay...maybe older than Trump.
Sure Biden says outlandish things...but not as outlandish as Trump.
Sure Biden is quick to temper...but not as much as Trump.

The case for this man is strikingly that he's "Not Trump"...even though he kind of is.

Crazy to think about.

Jul 15, 2020, 2:42 PM

but I understand voting against Trump. It just strikes me as crazy how much Biden is starting to look like Trump...just not quite as much...and with an entire career of never being the decision maker at any level...and with questionable mental facilities.

He's elite on several fronts...

-Went to law-school on full academic scholarship
-Top half of class
-Outstanding student in Poly Sci depart
-Graduated with three degrees

Whoops, Biden said it, but admitted all those were lies!

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.

lol, that's a great strategy though

Co-opt the opposition candidate by branding him in your likeness.

In this new and interesting political theater, the candidate is running against himself, to make himself look better, lol.

What a racket this place is.

and environmental for 40 years, I strongly endorse the Democratic plan in these arenas. Green energy technology is feasible and many cases economically competitive. Climate change is real if you believe in the overwhelming consensus of diverse scientific fields. Much like the virus, climate change is not fake or going away on its own. The US needs to fully embrace in green technologies, China is.

Big oil wants to keep society addicted to fossil fuels. This is much like the pharmaceutical industry which created the opioid crisis and pushes drug advertisements on every TV show. These industries are not bad, simply operating in their own economic best interests. Their revenue is tied to consumption.

The US needs a vibrant presence if not leadership in the renewable energy industries. In fact, existing energy companies are posed to lead renewable technology. The pharmaceutical industry is kind of important to beating coronavirus. There was a time when Conservatives aligned with Government incentives for free market based solutions to complex problems. There was also a time when Republicans embraced science.

No doubt China burns the candle at both ends ...

Jul 15, 2020, 5:02 PM

It seems they have both short term and long term energy technology strategies. Motivation may be to economically capitalize on the West’s motivation for Green technology. But yes China generates incredibly quantities of air emissions and water pollution. Not saying they are a good environmental actor but a capable player in Green R&D and subsequent commercialization.

Re: "China has 121 gigawatts of coal plants under construction,

Jul 16, 2020, 5:50 AM [ in reply to Re: "China has 121 gigawatts of coal plants under construction, ]

It's actually not a contradiction.

China doesn't care about human life. They don't care about the environment. They pollute like crazy and think nothing of killing their own citizens left and right.

They do care about money. China is working very hard to position themselves much higher on the tech food chain...and "green" tech is the wave of the future, and China assuredly knows it.

It's not just "wind" and "solar", though their solar tech is the best and cheapest in the world right now. If I was going to build a solar array I'd buy Chinese because it's much better and cheaper than our stuff right now. They're kicking out butt in solar worse than they are in 5G.

Jul 15, 2020, 4:09 PM [ in reply to As an engineer who worked in energy/resource conservation ]

First you say: "Big oil wants to keep society addicted to fossil fuels."

Then you say: "In fact, existing energy companies are posed to lead renewable technology."

So they want to keep us addicted to fossil fuel, yet are the leaders in renewable technology? You high?

You paint with a broad brush with your statement of "There was also a time when Republicans embraced science."

Most reasonable people I talk with about climate change aren't denying the Earth is warming. They are more pissed at how Democrats want to tax everything in to making it better.

Carbon credits are a scam. It doesn't change pollution. It forces money to change hands, and .Gov gets a slice. And why should India, China and developing countries get a free pass on pollution control? The technology exists to reduce emissions. So how is not reducing those emissions helping the planet?

Climate Change was politicized as a way to generate more tax revenue. It has very little to do with the environment. There are many ways to help the planet without taxation, yet Democrats don't want to hear any of it.

If green energy is so economically viable, why isn't it more prevalent? The answer is because it's not. We can produce much cheaper energy other ways. Green energy still needs massive subsidies to be even close to viable.

Short term, big oil’s revenue / profits based on increasing

Jul 15, 2020, 5:16 PM [ in reply to Wut da fugggg..... ]

Fossil fuel demand which maintains price. Their energy reserves are valued at future demand and price. So their short term stock price is dependent on maintaining or increasing fossil fuel consumption.

Energy companies include electric power and distribution which have dabbled in solar and wind technologies.

HTH ... not high now but maybe later tonight.

coal = electricity

oil = cars/trucks/transportation (yes there is some oil used for electricity, but it's relatively small)

The indirect is electric vehicles.

As an engineer who works in Electrical T&D business...

Jul 16, 2020, 8:40 AM [ in reply to As an engineer who worked in energy/resource conservation ]

I would say hold your horses a bit.

Yes the price of solar and wind has come down a lot, but there's still that pesky problem of energy storage, which has not been solved....and frankly, not really close to being solved on a scale needed for the level of renewable energy that is being discussed...and that's not even factoring in the cost of such storage to the whole equation. Replacing fossil fuel and nuclear generation with renewable generation is complicated as h#$% and we're already starting to see some impacts on system stability in certain areas of the country.

I strongly believe we need a more balanced approach to electricity generation with more investment in nuclear, natural gas, and cleaner coal plants while slowly increasing the renewable portfolio.

We have no idea at this point who will finish his term as POTUS if Joe is elected. He joined with Bernie to compose his agenda. With no doubt, Joe will lie but it's a roll of the dice on who he names as his VP running mate.

I imagine some don't care who he names. Imo, AOC as Joe's VP would not turn some folks toward Trump but remember this. Trump was America's response to Obama and Joe's union with Bernie Bros make Barry look like a KKK leader.
