The Auburn tree poisoning threatened the water supply, thus it was an actual danger.

Vandalism over $1000 in value is a felony in South Carolina. Between the damage to case and rock I imagine they can easily claim $1000 in damges which could potentially be 5 years in prison. If they can value it at $5000 or more then they could be facing 10 years in prison. That is not counting any others charges they may be able to generate - which will most certainly include trespassing charges. Additionally, there is no cap on civil damages in South Carolina relating to criminal trespass violations. Clemson or IPTAY (whoever actually owns the rock) can sue the hell out of whoever is convicted. Whoever did it will face much, much more than a slap on the wrist when caught.
