Scott Rhymer: Culture Changes Start With Blocking Somebody

Re: Scott Rhymer: Culture Changes Start With Blocking Somebody

Sep 3, 2009, 12:12 PM

I am convinced that in 2006 the Tigers ticket to Jacksonville died when Roman Fry went down in the Georgia Tech game. While we enjoyed the thrill of a great victory on national TV, our chance at an ACC championship ended when Roman Fry's season ended that night. After that game, the O-Line struggled the rest of the season, and our running game went into the tank. We did not have the depth on the O-Line that a championship team needs to be successful. I am nervous about O-Line this year - especially the depth. I guess we will all find out shortly, especially on September 10 in Atlanta.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You, sir, are exactly right about 2006

Sep 3, 2009, 1:51 PM

After that GT game, the running attack was out of whack and poor Mr. Proctor didn't have the goods to make up for it.

it is interesting how little attention this issue gets.

Everyone talks about Spiller and Ford's blazing speed, who the starting QB will be, what plays will be effective, etc...

But none of that matters if your O-line can't block...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Completely Crushed it

Amen Brother, I could not agree more! I have been a Clemson Fan since my FR year in 1972! After watching James Davis go 81 yeards as a Brown the other night and after watching our '85 matchup with UVA on College FB Classics, I had one prevailing thought "MAN UP O - LINE". How good would JD and CJ have been with an average O-Line? FRIGHTENING!!!!

Re: Scott Rhymer: Culture Changes Start With Blocking Somebody

Sep 3, 2009, 2:50 PM

YES AMEN TO THAT BROTHER. Our offensive lineman need to go out there and punch somebody in the mouth, theres no reason a 300+ man should get pushed around. Them boys need to go out there with the mindset that there going to dominate the boys on the other side of the ball. I hope everyone of the o lineman gets your article and hangs it on there bathroom mirror, bc they need to see it every morning they wake up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, he is up against another 300 pound guy

Sep 3, 2009, 3:41 PM

Otherwise everybody's O line would dominate and scores would be in the hundreds.

But I get your point. : )

"Tommy Bowden loved to talk about how we were one play or one game away from playing for an ACC Championship. My math suggests that we were more like 50 yards per game on the ground from playing for an ACC Championship."

SO VERY TRUE, SCOTT. THANKS FOR NAILING IT ON THE HEAD!

Great assesment, Scott! Thank you for calling "a spade,a spade."

Brad Scott's lines have been pathetic since he has been here. It is about dang time he produces some positive results. We squandered the talent we had with Davis and Spiller last year.

I am hopeful coach Pearman will instill a tougher attitude.

Sep 4, 2009, 2:13 PM

When I wrote this sentiment on a donor board post, I did not get one person to outwardly agree (even you). It's amazing how polarized the board was then. You could not have written this article before the Alabama game last year.

The Bowden defenders were so defensive and lashing out during that time period. Instead of attempting to understand what I was saying, they looked for a hole in the argument they could spin. I actually got lambasted for two words ("out talented" that I used to describe our 20 point wins) that had little bearing on my point. It's nice to see how far we've come and how much more united we as Clemson fans are heading into the season this year.
