Rodney Williams and Todd Ellis

Sometime in 1986 or 87, a buddy and I were eating at Leo's Wings in Irmo, SC. Seated together were Rodney Williams and Todd Ellis eating and talking. My buddy, who is a Lamecock fan, said if Rodney tries to pass the salt, he will overthrow it. I said if Todd tries to pass it to Rodney, someone else will intercept it. Rodney may not have been the best passer, but he protected the ball and ran the option to perfection. Todd Ellis, on the other hand, he handed the ball to the other team on a regular basis.

Since I can only give you 1 TU I will give sever thumbs up. That is a really funny post. I wanted give give you s few thumbs up for this post????????????????????????. Coot LB’s in the 80’s ???????? Coot DB’s in 80’s ??????.
Rodney Williams picked apart Penn St in the bowl game making some really nice 20 and 30 yard passes. I think our first play was an approximate 35 year pass. Rodney also used up the LB’s and CB’s with some nice passes against the coots. The coots were just pissed because RW came to Clemson.
Go Tigers!!!!

bowl, someone asked Danny Ford on a TV interview how he was going to deal with "the great" Penn State. He just looked at them and said "We are going to run, rUN, RUN!" Then the first play Rodney throws like a 35 yard bomb. The Penn State sideline looked like an ant hill someone had kicked open. Coaches frantically running every which way setting up chalkboards and easels and scratching out defensive plays as fast as they could write. Funny thing was, after we scared the bejubus out of them and loosened them up, we pretty much did run all over them in the second half. What a great game.

Didn't Ellis have more interceptions than passing TDs ?
The dude got trucked so hard by Clemson DL and Linebackers that I often felt sorry for his momma.

Rodney Williams Year School Conf Pos G Cmp Att Pct Yds Y/A AY/A TD Int Rating *1985 Clemson ACC QB 12 56 122 45.9 772 6.3 4.6 1 5 93.6 *1986 Clemson ACC QB 12 98 200 49.0 1245 6.2 4.8 4 8 99.9 *1987 Clemson ACC QB 12 101 209 48.3 1486 7.1 5.5 6 10 108.0 *1988 Clemson ACC QB 12 78 186 41.9 1144 6.2 5.7 5 4 98.2 Career Clemson 333 717 46.4 4647 6.5 5.2 16 27 100.7
Most Importantly, Rodney had 32 wins, 46 consecutive games completing a pass, 3 ACC championships, 3 bowl victories, and final season AP rankings of #17,#12 & #9 in his last three seasons, won in the battle of successful businessmen in life post college football, and lastly is a GREAT Guy.
Todd Ellis Year School Conf Pos G Cmp Att Pct Yds Y/A AY/A TD Int Rate 1986 South Carolina Ind QB 11 205 340 60.3 3020 8.9 7.1 20 22 141.4 *1987 South Carolina Ind QB 12 241 432 55.8 3206 7.4 5.4 10 24 114.7 *1988 South Carolina Ind QB 12 198 391 50.6 2353 6.0 4.1 9 21 98.0 1989 South Carolina Ind QB 8 103 187 55.1 1374 7.3 7.0 10 6 128.0 Career South Carolina 747 1350 55.3 9953 7.4 5.7 49 73 118.4
Todd Ellis had 25 wins, highest and only top 25 ranking was #15 in 1987, as we all know-he lost both bowl games he played in, only beat Clemson one time in his career, poor mouths Clemson every chance he gets

Rodney (DW4 or Fuller) I think we have at least one, possibly two more Nattys. That is how good the talent level on those teams was. Not meant to be a severe putdown of Rodney, he was adequate to the task most times. But, Fuller, and later Watson, were exceptional most times. The world is full of "what ifs".
But, you could put Toad Ellis on any Lamecock team you want, and it would not have made much difference, they would still be unicycling out.

That’s not on Rodney

He ran the triple option as well as it could be run, and we had the players around him to execute that style of offense to near perfection. The problem was that the option is not a quick strike, run up the score offense (unless you were playing Wake Forest). Our defense during that time was great, but if the other team managed to score more than 2-3 touchdowns we were in trouble. NC State game in ‘87 is a prime example. We made a great 2nd half comeback but there wasn’t enough time to score the 5 touchdowns we needed against a very good Wolfpack team with the option.

My Freshman year and the only "Air Rodney" game of which I am aware. Trying to find the box score but I think Rodney passed in excess of 300 yds. Game summaries have us at the NC State 49 with a first down and two minutes to go...but the magic tan out.

If my memory is correct, he set an NCAA record for pass attempts in a half.

We had a forth down to go and needed about twelve yards to get onto reasonable field goal range to win the game. The pass was there but the back put his hands up wrong and dropped the pass. The loss was not on Rodney's shoulders.
