Brian Dawkins, Jr., ready to forge his own path at Clemson

Brian Dawkins, Jr. will follow in his father’s footsteps and play football at Clemson, but at the end of the day he wants to make his own name on and off the playing field. First, however, he will spend a year at prep school. What does he say about Clemson?

Brian Dawkins Sr was also 6' tall. His son is literally shorter than every CB in the NFL pretty much ever... There's a reason he doesn't have a single other D1 offer.

Find me a single CB in the league recently thats been 5'7" and prove me wrong then, and don't try to say he's 5'9" like some of the sites claim. There's a reason Rivals had Vic at 6'5" coming out, they overestimate everyone's height for hype.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wrong. According to Rivals & ESPN he has ZERO other offers.

Apr 16, 2015, 10:28 AM

Except for Clemson, there are no check marks (meaning offers) from any of the schools listed.

He doesn't even have any division 2 or division 3 offers.

I guess Dabo knows better than every coach in the country.

I have no problem with the kid walking on. But he obviously doesn't deserve a D1 scholarship and his dad can certainly afford to pay his tuition, and not handicap his alma mater by 1 scholarship.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Wrong. According to Rivals & ESPN he has ZERO other offers.

Good ole negative Razz. Nothing in the article says he has a scholarship offer, just that he wants to come to Clemson. Guess you will never get over being butthurt about Clemson not asking you who to hire for football coach.

Re: What's the difference other than "star rating" on

Apr 15, 2015, 4:18 PM

Ideal size for his position, offers from comparable programs, invitations to elite level combine events and all star games.

I still don't necessarily have an issue with this if it was a stand-alone occurrence, but we're bringing in 2 undersized legacy cornerbacks in the same year and that could seriously hurt our depth at the position.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yeah! BS legacy schollies like Mitch Hyatt!!

Apr 15, 2015, 3:39 PM [ in reply to Yeah! BS legacy schollies like Mitch Hyatt!! ]

Yeah because I'm OBVIOUSLY talking about Hyatt and not DJ Greenlee, Amir Trapp, the Davis twins, and Zach Riggs... Honoring legacies to create the family atmosphere is one thing, but Dabo is effectively limiting the number of scholarships we have available to offer to quality players who have a realistic shot of helping the team.

I'm saying you're making the judgment call of who

Apr 15, 2015, 4:04 PM [ in reply to Re: Yeah! BS legacy schollies like Mitch Hyatt!! ]

is a "quality" player based solely on the recruiting services' star rankings since I know for a fact you've evaluated NONE of those players yourself.

Any of those guys, including Hyatt, could all turn out to be non-contributors, All-Americans, or somewhere in between. Considering how we've been able to develop some "no-name" recruits like Grady Jarrett and knowing that politics, geography, and (self?) promotion play a huge role in recruiting ratings, I'm willing to give our coaches the benefit of the doubt.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I'm saying you're making the judgment call of who

Apr 15, 2015, 4:07 PM

You're right in that I don't do any evaluation of these players, but every single school in the country evaluates these kids and the fact is that not a single one of them offered these kids a scholarship. And yet Clemson, a team finishing in the top 10 and trying to compete for a national title, does.

If the coaches see something in him, I personally trust them. Star ratings are fun to debate in the offseason, but inconsequential once the pads go on. I've seen four star recruits cry and go home after three days of training camp, and I've also seen kids who never got any attention earn a scholarship as a walk-on and become a starter for us. I wish this kid well and would love to see him as a Tiger, just like his dad.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: As a walk-on I hope?

Apr 15, 2015, 3:45 PM

The question is, how much do the coaches actually see in these kids past their last name? You know #### well they have other players that they know could impact the team more than these guys. Look at Quinshad Davis for UNC... the dude was a stud coming out of Gaffney and we didn't have the room to offer him a scholarship after our class filled up. This happens to quality players all the time. If Clemson wants to compete at the highest level they need all the scholarships allowed to them.

Really?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hard, but not impossible

Apr 15, 2015, 7:55 PM

Perrenial pro-bowler Antoine Winfield is 5'9, and one of the best corners in the NFL. Bob Sanders (5'8) was one of the baddest NFL DBs on the field when he was in his prime. Captain Munnerlyn was an elite college player at TSDS at 5'8.

If this was the NFL, I would probably tend to agree with you. However at the college level you can be a real impact player at CB even if you're under 5'10.

There are several very good 5'7-5'9 corners at the college level. Will Likely from MD comes to mind. That being said, pretty much all are at least high 3* players with a great offer list. None of our legacy guys have been like that.
It was mentioned earlier that other programs like Bama take legacies as well. Well, they offer guys like JC Chalk as legacies - NOT the Trapps and Davises of the world.
That being said, out of all the legacies, Dawkins Jr. has the highest upside...so there's that?

FYI, all those legacies you mentioned will contribute to our team, period. Expect to see the Davis twins on kickoffs, some blowout game reps. I fully can see Trapp Jr. returning kicks, both kickoffs and punts. Riggs will also find a way to play. Dawkins Jr, NO questioning the blood lines, and while he is going to prep for one year, there is no scholarship offer at this time, just a desire for him to go to Clemson. Frankly Scarlet, coots have no clue about recruiting and legacies.

How does offering a scholarship to a legacy kid (5'7" DB) with no other offers create more of a family atmosphere than just offering him a preferred walk-on spot and then giving him a scholarship if he EARNS it?

Seems like it would create hard feelings if more talented walk-ons are paying full tuition while a multimillionaire's legacy is getting a free ride from day 1 (if that happens.)

I think you're right. That's 5 primarily special teams players you just named who I don't expect to ever be starters. I hope I'm wrong but we were many of those players only D1 offers and only offer period in some cases... Maybe Dabo sees something in them and thinks that they can be starters 4-5 years from now, at least I hope. But when we talk about lack of quality depth at certain positions, this should take part of the blame.

...the wagon then. Seeing how you do such great research why don't you look at other programs and see the legacies they bring in. You cry about other schools don't do this but yet you don't know what the #### other schools do. How about you take a look. This university foremost is a school of higher learning and after that its teaching young people how to be great productive people in this society. If this kid getting brought in only because of him being a legacy bothers you that much you might need to re-evaluate your life. A Clemson grad don't act like that and they d@mn sure don't use it without provoke to make a STUPID point as to make someone think that you are better or know more about the program than a non-grad of this university. depth chart. Riggs will not see a meaningful snap in his entire career. Playing in the last 30 seconds of a 63-7 blowout doesnt count. At that point they'd let fans come down and snap the ball.

But, I dont care about Riggs, he's not consuming a scholarship. So, I have no more beef with him. I was mistaken and thought he was on scholly.

Re: New Story: Brian Dawkins, Jr., ready to forge his own path at Clemson

Apr 15, 2015, 5:41 PM

There are *gasp* more important things than football. We should feel proud and honored to welcome BRIAN DAWKINS JR to Clemson. The fact that he mentions football as kind of secondary to the teachings he will receive as a young man should tell you all you need to know about this kid. We can always, always use kids that want to succeed as a person more than they want to succeed as a football player. Work hard, Mr Dawkins. I look forward to seeing you in orange and white.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why not welcome him as a walk-on? Daddy can afford tuition.

Apr 16, 2015, 11:04 AM

Why give him a precious scholarship instead of giving him a walk-on opportunity? No other school gave him an offer. if he wasn't a legacy, the Clemson coaches probably wouldn't even make him a preferred walk-on. If he walks on and EARNS a scholarship, that's fine. Why not go that route?

Apr 16, 2015, 8:52 AM

his son a scholarship out of charity?? WHY? He got ZERO D1 offers. He sucks as a player. If he wanted to come to Clemson so badly, why couldnt daddy just pay the tuition. It's not like he's poor or anything.

I have no problem with taking a few legacies every now and then who couldnt get a scholarship without being a legacy. But we are getting ridiculously full of these guys that will NEVER play a down. Davis twins, Zach Riggs, DJ Greenlee, Trapp Jr, Dawkins JR. These are WASTED scholarships. Might as well just give one to me, I have about as much chance as contributing to the team as these guys do.

It's self imposed NCAA sanctions...Hurts our depth.

Rivals is often wrong when it comes to stuff like this. They also had the Davis twins as full offers right off the bat and that was not the case.

Don't let hat get in the way of your pathetic negativity though.

Nice to see you have replaced that other guy in the thread as the whiny ###.

Rivals doesn't say "right off the bat", got Davis kids right

Apr 16, 2015, 11:24 AM

Rivals doesn't say whether or not the offers are "right off the bat". Rivals just lists them as having an "offer". It's possible that Rivals is wrong about Dawkins, but Rivals was right about the Davis kids since Clemson offered them gray shirt scholarships. Since Dawkins will be going to prep school first (like the Davis kids) Rivals' reporting seems consistent here.

Why can't you just reply with a civil, Christian, adult response? Why do you have to resort to juvenile ad hominem attacks? How old are you? Did you graduate Clemson? I know thousands of adults but I don't know anybody who behaves in such a juvenile manner.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Rivals doesn't say "right off the bat", got Davis kids right

Apr 16, 2015, 11:52 AM

I call spades spades. As far as your Christian comment goes I dont think it is very "Christian" of you to get on here trashing a kid whom you have never met about a situation for which you know NONE of the details. It is pathetic plain and simple.

The fact that any Clemson "fan" ####### about our coaches decisions when it comes to recruiting is a joke. That is by far our strong suit and have you ever thought maybe one of the biggest draws fro these kids to Clemson is the family atmosphere? Maybe just maybe showing that through loyalty to legacy kids is a part of that draw? Ever thought about that? I am guessing not because based on your post history you are too busy always looking for something to ##### and moan about and a negative thing to post.

Yes I did graduate from Clemson.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I didn't trash the kid. I questioned the scholly offer.

Apr 16, 2015, 2:28 PM

There are lots of great kids who don't deserve D-1 football scholarship offers-- including my own kids. It's an absurd stretch to say that I trashed Dawkins by questioning Dabo's scholarship offer, instead of a walk-on offer, when (according to Rivals & ESPN) Dawkins has no other offers.

Rather than trying to make the false equivalency justification that I issued insults, can't you just explain why you think it's OK for you do it? Do you think that's a civil, adult way to respond?

I addressed the "family atmosphere" issue earlier in this thread by saying that a family atmosphere could be maintained by offering him a walk-on spot, so I'm not sure why you ask if I "ever thought about that".

I post lots of positive comments and year-after-year I have praised Dabo and staff about their recruiting abilities. Some recent examples from a quick Google search...

Re: New Story: Brian Dawkins, Jr., ready to forge his own path at Clemson

Maybe Clemson does not want to run their program like the other schools many on here criticize.

Perhaps legacy scholarships are more in line with the culture here, and winning the right way is more important than just winning.
