There were tons of black folks that were republican during the 64 civil rights act. There was obviously an incentive to do so.
Other than Strom, I’m not aware of any other Dem that went Pub. Heck, Robert Byrd stayed Democrat until he died in 2010!
I believe The “switch” that dems talk about is an insincere effort to say that all racists are Pubs and they had nothing to do with KKK or slavery.

Is it possible to continually "be nice" to a group and give things and still be racist? Plenty of white people take this approach that wouldn't have anything to do with black people beyond arms length.
Is it racist to have faith that people can achieve on their own without having to be given things? I know plenty of "blue collar" Trumpers that work and live sided by side with black people with no issues.

Got it. I went back and re-read just to be sure. My answer is: Birtherism isn't officially part of the platform, but I think Trump's participation in birtherism is appealing to racists who hated Obama and wanted him to go back where he came from (which some of them genuinely thought was Africa).

They don't like, and are afraid of BLM terrorists, and especially of blacks rioting and looting and destroying cities, especially those cities with black mayors that have done zero for their black constituents for decades.
That means that the independents and the groups on the fence, who are terrified of the leftist agenda, will vote for Trump. He wins easily.
The current polls are an amalgam of ALL peoples. Trump is doing well in the battleground states.
