I hope it happens again sometime soon, too. We are just struggling out there. If Brownell can't start figuring out a way to generate points, he is going to lose the fanbase. Looking at attendance, I imagine he has already lost a lot of people.

The Purnell years were at least exciting

We were only an above average team, but the games were fun to go to.

OP's basketball "style" was exciting and easier to recruit to.

Clemson hoops has always been a roller coaster ride ...

Here's how it's always been:
... A slow steady climb up the steep slope ... a few triumphant seconds at the crest ... followed by a terrifying plummet back into the depths ... only to start climbing once again.

when it was more painful to watch than now, and sadly the heartbreaking aspect is just as pre-eminent in my own memory.....like growing old, being a lifelong Clemson basketball fan is not for the faint of heart.

In 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 we went to the NCAA tournament.

Some people want to pretend we've never been any good and we never will be and you can't expect us to be because it is impossible.
You know who you are.

somehow, Clemson's ONE SHOT at the Elite 8 in all the years I've been attending Clemson basketball games doesn't overshadow the Press Maravich years, the Bobby Roberts era, the Larry Shyatt experience,...Tates Locke's time was exciting, but he never won 20 games and got us a nasty visit by the NCAA, Rick Barnes and Oliver Purnell had some terrific moments--but almost predictably, they departed and our basketball program plummeted, Bill Foster was building the foundation for hoops excellence, but he left almost mysteriously to restart the Miami program.
Clemson's had some talent....dating back to the days of Bill Yarborough. Few know that Clemson was a favorite to win the very first NCAA tournament (won by Oregon) when Coach McFadden played basketball.....Clemson's beaten some great programs led by HOF coaches and players over the years and its made for some thrilling times in LJ (and Fike). But our Tigers have NEVER been a consistent hoops force in the conference and certainly not on the national stage.
For you to imply otherwise, is simply incorrect.

pretty much sums up the Clemson basketball program.
The fact that we're NOT very good right now is just a part of the normal historical cycle.
Want to break the cycle? It takes dedication, patience, and money. three things that have always been in short supply for Clemson hoops.

I remember that game very well. It was a wonderful night.

That particular Duke game a great example of OP basketball at it's very best. We're shooting lights out and playing good defense and absolutely everything is clicking!!
But, apparently there are no videos of the times OPs teams couldn't hit a shot to save their lives, played pressing full court defense that was easily broken for snow bird lay-ups on the other end and failed at the FT line repeatedly ... resulting in bad losses and frequently blowing double-digit leads down the stretch.
Prime Example? The devastating loss to Villanova in the first round of the NCAAs in a game where we were heavily favored and had a huge lead.

I'm not saying he was perfect, but it was 10x better than what we have now. We aren't going to even come close to sniffing the NCAA's anytime soon.

was one of the toughest places to play in the ACC. I can remember going to greet the team after the miracle comeback up at Maryland. That's why I don't buy this baloney and lame excuses from Brownell pumpers that have a blind eye to how bad this program is now.

they named Littlejohn the #2 toughest place to play in America, behind only Cameron!
Now you can hear a pin drop during play.

I would love to have a consistent winner at Clemson in basketball, but the sad fact is that the coaches who seem capable of making it a reality also happen to be QUITTERS!
